Problem with midi output selection

Hello!

There is something strange about the way Sonar behaves when I select Options/Midi devices. I got three choices for output there:

1. My soundcard´s midi out
2. My soundcard´s midi synth
3. The windows midi mapper

When I arrange the order of the devices the way I want it and then enable them all, two things happen when I press OK and check back later:

1. The order of the devices is changed
2. Not all devices are enabled anymore

That way, I can never use all of the devices in my project, and the order is wrong, too. Is this a bug, or what is the cause of this?

Whats your soundcard?
Is there some other program that may be using these devices while sonar is trying to use them?

It´s a SoundBlaster 128 PCI. I got no other programs running that might use the sound card. Besides, I can use each of the 3 outputs if I select them individually, only when I´m trying to enable all 3 of them, at least one gets kicked out again. And the order is changed as well.

I first thought that this could be in order to prevent an open project to get messed up by reassigning the output channels, but it also happens when there is no project open.

Yes, I can. And I also think I found the explanation for my problem. As mentioned, I got three options:

1. SoundBlaster Midi Out
2. SoundBlaster Midi Synth
3. Windows Midi Mapper

I have found out that the problem arises when I use a combination that includes both 1. and 3. Apparently I cannot use my sound card´s midi synth and the Windows midi mapper together because they probably refer to the same hardware device. However, I can use combination 1 + 2 and 1 + 3, the changing of the orders comes from disabling any redundant device and moving it to the bottom.

I believe that this explains the problem, seems like all is OK.

Yeah. I think I recall from somewhere that the Midi Mapper is not an actual midi port, but rather a Microsoft thing that simply attempts to find the best midi device available.

There is also a Windows Sound Mapper that does the same thing for audio devices. I've seen this show up in some programs like Wavelab (although I don't think I've seen it in Sonar anywhere).

My recollection of the advice I've seen is to ignore the mapper and choose the actual devices, which looks to be 1 & 2 in your case Eisenbart
