hi guys

i bought a new acoustic guitar. i tried connecting it directly to the mic socket in my computer(ie the cable from my guitar direclty goes to mic socket in PC)..initially it was giving a good output..but now it sounds like a overdrive tone..im using cool edit pro to record..i tried nuendo, sound forge also..but the result is same...i know connectin directly to mic is nt a good idea...but it was giving a good output earler..that y im confused now...

please help

The mic input is a fairly low impedance load and most passive guitar pickups need a very high impedance load.

If you pickup system is active you should be able to turn it down on the guitar.

check the battery in the accoustic when they start to die weird things will happen. also its best to still mic the guitar. i use a mix of the pickup and a condenser on my accoustic.

DOn't leave the guitar plugged in, that'll kill the battery fast.

Right, if it's an active pickup system then check the battery.

I think we are all forgetting he said he's put it from his guitar to his mic input, I have a feeling he is using his stock soundcard no interface etc.

He pretty much says as much so your feeling is most likely correct. I addressed the possible pickup -> mic input mismatch in the first reply.

But that doesn't account for the change from good sound to bad, distorted sound. A bad battery on an active pickup would have exactly that effect.

Did you change any settings on your guitar pickup? Like turn the volume up, for instance?

Its the battery if it was working fine one min and not the next battery is dead or almost dead. recording direct from the guitar into the mic input on a computer works fine i used to do it all the time jusy doesnt have the quality of recording with a mic or dual mics or in mycase mic and the pickup. i honestly dont mind the sound of just my pickup tho.

It could well be the battery as everyone else here has suggested, it could also be that the volume control has been turned up and is overloading the mic input on your soundcard. So try turning the volume down first, then change the battery if not! :)

thnq

Hey guys thnq so much for all this replies...
but these replies are not helping

i changed my battery last week only .I dont think its a problem with battery...
I am taking the out from my guitar(not thru external mic) direct to microphone socket in my soundcard.
then im using cool edit pro (as of now) and recording it...when i record the speaker output is really goood...its a perfect acoustic guitar tone....but unfortunatly the recording output sounds like overdrive tone of an electric guitar...

i didnt had this problem before....:-(

And the "out" from your guitar, is probably not an impedance match for the "in" of your mic socket on your PC. Did you miss this point?

Is there a difference in tone/quality (not just volume) at a very low gain on your guitar pickup to a very high gain on your guitar pickup? Try it. Report back. Don't just give a global "not helping" about the battery comments...

If you can't get it to work you might need to pony up for some real equipment. Sorry. Life sucks sometimes...
