Problem w/MR-8

I got my MR-8 2 weeks ago and so far I like it. The only problem is that when I use the "Powerful" button it causes the volume to go up and down, almost like tape flutter. Is this a well known problem? Is there a fix for it?
any info is greatly appreciated.

the powerful and natural buttons are what they call mastering effects. the powerful button will increase the volume considerably, especially in the bass range.

i take it from your post thought, that it causes the levels to "change back and forth". that isn't normal.

I just got an mr8 too, & am just discovering the same kind of flutter on my tracks. I used the natural & bright buttons. The flutter wasn't there while doing mr8 playback prior to bouncing.
 
Ok guys, after playing around a bit with the old MR-8 I found that the levels stay constant and the flutter ges away when you bring the faders down (including the master). Now it's perfect!
 
Thanks for the info. How far should you bring them down so as not to reduce volume, or do the faders have anything to do with the recorded volume anyway?

i feel those effecst are a poor use of a preset eq, they really dont sound very good, you are better off not using them and trying to get a good mix is hard enough....

best bet is moving files to the computer for mixing, but if you dont, i think you will get a better recording without those presets ;my 2 cents....
 
faders/flutter

The faders for the tracks are not your recorded levels but used for playback and mixing to tape or into your pc(via soundcard) The master fader takes all your tracks recorded levels and combines them left and right. This is the overall level of tracks combined. You want your master level to be just under or around 0db with left and right meters staying even with one another. So if you use the powerful setting,start your master fader at 0 and work your meter up to 0db. Hopefully the flutter won't occur before you reach that level. But like Dave said if your takes are eq'd well and and at good levels you shouldn't need those presets at mixing time. The MR8 can do a lot of things,but no eq. Good luck Pj
 
I think the "flutter" you are hearing using the mastering presets is because these presets are using compression. If your tracks are hot already there is going to be a lot of "flutter" in volume especially on the powerful preset. Like someone else said these presets are certainly not high quality. You would do better to transfer the tracks to pc and use some kind of compression there. I like endorphin myself. www.digitalfishphones.com

You can still download it for free. I just downloaded it here at work. It is a VST plugin so you have to have something that accepts VST plugs.

do a search for vst and direct x effects,

i have had some problems with endorphin, after checking with some of the more advanced users, i have found the classic master limiter, and the classic compressor sound much better then endorphin....

Thanks for this information. I have never used any of the Classic plugs.
 
I've got them them both, but they're all dll files. Do you use them in conjunction with some other program?

VST plugins have to be used in conjunction with other programs that accept them. N-track will accept them. To get them to work with N-track you just unzip them to the "plugins" or "VST" folder (can't remember which one?). Then when you open N-track and effects they will be there.
If you do not have software that accepts VST plugins they are worthless.

I agree the mastering effects are not even worth fussin' with. Go with outboard gear or plugins.
