problem tracking down vocal,please help

with a homesetup i have to record vocal dry just to find in mixing period that after i apply compression to it ,the little mistakes here and there are now exposing themselves ,with no compression i hardly hear them
and i have to resing many times
How can i avoid this problem?
i record into cakewalk and i think i can't patch compression b4hand
maybe external compressor?

i think the external compressor is the way to go outside of nessbass' suggestions...

Behringer Autocom Pro @ $79 will get you very decent results....

The RNC @$175 will give you killer results....
