Hi

I am trying to plug a condencer mic into a Korg Workstation. I have been told that the condencer mic needs an "external mic pre-amp" in order to work so I am using an Alesis Multi-Mix 4 (a mini mixer with xlr and 1/4 inch sockets). However, when I plug in the mic all I get is a very loud, deep humming sound and hardly any signal at all. Has anyone any advice they could offer?

thanks

Nick

What is the microphone?

A condenser microphone normally needs 48V phantom power.

Looking at the Alesis Multi-Mix 4 I can't see any phantom power switch - so it looks as if the mixer is only designed for dynamic microphones, or for battery-powered microphones.

If the Korg is line-in only - you will need a mic. pre-amplifier that is equipped to supply 48V phantom power - or use an external phantom power supply with the mixer you have.

The Alesis Multi-Mix 4 has a phantom power switch. See my attachment.

Just a hunch but are you using an XLR to XLR cable? If not and you're going via an XLR to TRS jack that won't have phantom and WILL be your problem.

OK - missed that when I looked at the pictures on line.

Make sure that the phantom is switched *on* and that you use an XLR to XLR cable and do *not* go into the jack socket.
