I recently received an MXL 990 from a friend, with no chords or anything, just the microphone. I was directed by a friend to buy an XLR to USB adapter so I could plug it into my computer. My mac recognizes it, when I go to system pref, then sound, then input, it says "usb device" but the audio levels aren't moving and nothing records when I try to use it in garage band. Did i do something wrong in the preferences? Did i buy the wrong hook up? PLease help me if you can, thank you.

Welcome to the board.

Forget the xlr to usb cable, you're not doing your signal any favours.

Get an audio interface if you're serious about recording.

There's hundreds (if not thousands) of threads around here about what audio interface to get. Just throw in a search and see how it works out for you.

The xlr to USB cable will not work with that mic because that mic needs phantom power. You need to get an interface that provides phantom power (most do).
