Anybody own this piece of equipment? I'm looking to add a tube compressor to my setup. Any other suggestions in this price range? Thanks,

jim

I have one and I love it. It can compress pretty subtely or extreme and is great on bass and electric guitar. I don't use it for bass guitar much because I like the compression I get in my Bass POD. I run entire mixes through it sometimes, not to really control the dynamics but I just like the sound of going through the analog circuits. It's great to have at least one photo-optical compressor and one VCA compressor, because they are good for different applications. The Pro VLA is easy to use and it's built like a tank and the VU meters work well. It's selling for $460 at www.8thstreet.com

Just because it has tubes it's doesn't color the sound like many tube preamps do. It's not as transparent as my other compressor, PreSonus BlueMax, but it definitely sounds better. The BlueMax CHANGES the sound too much if I compress heavily, but the Pro VLA can compress heavily and still make the source sound very natural.
