I was wondering if its possible to get the pro tools software with out any hardware. i am currently running nuendo with a delta 1010 soundcard. ive used both programs and i think they are pretty similar but i would like to get more familiar with protools without changing my setup too much.
and they do make pro tools for pc right?
thanks

Pro Tools Free is the only way I know of legally you can use PT w/o H/W

yeh, you cant buy pro tools now adays..

like teacher said pro tools free is the only way to go.. i think its version 5.1 or something, and it only runs on windows 98 :(

Teacher is right. And even at that, it is Win98/ME and a POS on top of it.

If you are interested in learning it, try and find a AMIII card on ebay for like $75. that way you have hardware, so you can run the PTle app.

Cheers,
C

Pro Tools Free is crap compared to Nuendo. Not worth the effort IMO.

Dude, Nuendo is $1200

PT free is by definition FREE.

don't be ridiculous.

Didja read the whole thread? He already has Nuendo. What I meant is if he wants to get into Pro Tools, the free version is probably not the best choice.

Didja read my post? I already had said that AND gave him an alternative if he wanted to experiment with PT by getting some inexpensive hardware.

So I guess we agree!

You're right, I didn't read your whole post. It's a bad habit, and I hate it when I do it more than when someone else does. Sorry.

ok so basically if i want to convert to protools i would have to get the digi 8io thing and protools le comes with it. i just want to be familiar with protools incase i have a job where i need to use it.

get the mbox....it's the cheapest way you can go and still use the latest version of PT (6.7 now). no reason to get something like the 002 if you just want to use the software

so if i got the mbox, i could still use my delta 1010? cause i need an 8 i/o soundcard
and also, lets say i get the digi soundcard package with that be significantly better than using nuedno with the delta 1010?

you won't be able to use your 1010 with PT...it requires it's own hardware. I was just saying, if you want to learn the software, that's the best route to go. and whether it being better than nuendo and the 1010...it's all subject to opinion. i like PT and don't like Nuendo. My opinion, though. PT is cheaper than your setup right now though.

Significantly? No, I don't think so. It's just a different tool. Some prefer it, some do not.

If you get it done in Nuendo with the 1010, I would stick with it...

You can use your Mbox as a sorta "key" for open/run PT. Record the tracks on Nuendo and import to PT for mixing. Don't know if it's worth the effort tho.

well yeah, i really like nuedno, i know it really well and it does get the job done. But i was just thinking in terms of larger studios which most of them run protools. I want to be able to use it and know protools incase i have a job using it.
Is it worth it to be certified in protools? and how much does it cost, oh and one last question, are there any big studios that use nuendo?
thanks for all the replies

I think bennychico just got certified, so I am sure he can answer those questions. Likewise, I am sure there are big studios using Nuendo. I have used it and it's really, really, really good. I still feel more comfortable with PT, but that is because I use it more often than anything else.

I believe with OMF you can import and export sessions with PT and Nuendo, no?

by importing and exporting sessions, you mean from pro tools to nuedno vice versa?

I know that Sonar can save/load OMG files, and in theory should then be able to work with PT.

I don't know if this is true, but a few PT zealots I know argue that the PT's audio engine sounds better than other systems. I take this with a huge grain of salt given the source :), but it may be true. I've never AB'd the two systems.

I work primarily with Sonar, and like it. Not that I'm a major player or anything.......
