Pro Tools....sigh

I know everyone has different takes on Pro Tools, but I was wondering if PT users can share some opinions with me here.

I recently bought a MBox for mobility and hoping that I can start learning PT since it's a popular program. But, it took me 10-15 mins just to figure out how to do a basic fade-out! and then I realize that I need to run Ableton(which came with MBox) if I wanna deal with loops. When I finally finished a small task after a couple of hrs (which would normally take me 5 minutes), I found out that I can't export the track to mp3....

So, PT people, please tell me, is it worth to pick up a Pro Tools for Morons book and appreciate the program later or stick with whatever I was using? I do some MIDI, deal with loops alot, and some live instruemtns on top of those.

PS. Do they have a driver that will allow Digi hardwares to run with Cubase and Cakewalk now?

Thanks,
Al

They have a driver available from their website that's called the digi asio driver or something like that. Basically it's a driver that allows sound that would normally playback through your computer's soundcard to playback through your mbox or digi001/02 or whatever digi hardware.

Oh I had a good laugh when I read this one...

I wasn't laughing at you, just the way it came off sounded funny.

On a serious note, I say anything is worth the time you're willing to put into it. If you're considering working for the big studios, or any high budget projects, then Pro Tools is the current golden gauntlet. I say this as a professional in the field.

But honestly, nah, you could do fine with lower end software. Whatever gets your paint on canvas, know what I mean?

Apple+F (alt+F on windows i think) to create fades on a selected region. or you can draw in the automated fade just like any other software program

PT will work with cubase. with cakewalk...i'm not sure, but if cakewalk uses asio drivers it should.

A book will help you if you learn that way. Here are some lessons that are online too:

Look around the Digi site too, read your manual, etc. There are TONS of information out there to help you. If you want to...come join us at the Pro Tools LE forum that was recently started: http://protoolsle.proboards32.com
Everyone there is pro Pro Tools and will help you if they can. Good luck.

bennychico11,

Great resources! Thanks a ton, and see you at the Pro Tools LE forum:)

a bit about the looping,

It's not really what I do, but at one point I looked into it. Pro tools is not really designed for that stuff. Yeah, it can be done but you might be happier with some software or outboard gear made for looping. You are trying to make a big dog sleep in a small house. Know what I mean? Since you already have pro tools, then I would try getting your loops done on another program (I hear Fruity Loops is used a lot), import those tracks into a protools session and work from there.

Good Luck!

make the manual your friend

The Pro Tools manual is a good read. Learn a couple hot keys a day and soon you can fly.

jonhall5446,

I wasn't talking about creating loops, but rather looping a loop, if you've used Cakewalk or Acid, then you would kow what I mean. You can simply drag a loop in Edit view to make it repeat. Cutting and pasting a loop it isn't exactly the easiest way to go about it IMO.

Lorddiagram,

I wish I had a better manual, but MBox only came with some basic setup manual, is that what you were referring to?

need to create a loop of a loop without cuting and pasting? select the region and apple+D (or control D) it, or you can control click drag, or Option+R (Alt+R) to get the repeat function which allows you to type in how many copies you want copied

simple.
to create a fade>>Press the f6 f7 f8 simultainiously, to activate the supertool. Put youyr mouse icon in either top corner of any audio region and a little box appears. You can draw fades by holding down the mouse and pulling into the audio.

Cant do loops in pro tools?!

You need to be in Grid mode (top left hand corner of the edit window) yu ll see a box that says "grid" click that>>VIOLA! theres your time map for looping audio/midi sections.

set up an audio track and put a click (rtas) plug in in there andc you should be set my friend.

Good luck to you.
Once you become used to the general navigation of PT, youll understand how simple it really can be.
