Hi there,
I have a new M Audio FT C400 interface. (changed from M audio FT ver 2) which worked great and sounded great with Cubase 5, the C400 works very much the same in Cubase 5 and generally I am pleased, except the sound seems to be quite a bit different even using the same CB-5 pre-sets that I used with the FT ver 2. Could this be the difference in using enhanced pre amps of the C400..?

I have installed ProTools SE and there is a great improvement in the volume and clarity of certainly my acoustic guitar.

I use Vista SP2 32bit, and only use acoustic electro through DI into xlr and SM 58 mic for the vocal I record both tracks together

Some question re PT SE if you can help please:
1) Is there a proper mixer in PT SE
2) Is there a demo/trial that I could try out before considering an upgrade... what to upgrade to..?
3 I am struggling to get a decent sound from my acoustic ? any help on preset menu's

Thank you for any help

Regards

Alan

I'm guessing there is at least a 24 track mixer as it says it allows you to mix up to 24 tracks. As far as proper, depends what you are comparing it too. Is it the same as in the full version of pro tools... probably not.

I don't believe there is any demo for Pro Tools 9 or 10, but it's worth it in my opinion. If all your ever going to record is your vocal and a guitar maybe not.

Acoustic DI is okay to blend in with a mic'ed signal, rarely would I rely on that as my main take. Even if you throw the 58 near the 12th fret or something, I'm sure it will be better than just a DI. Give it a try and see what you think.

PT SE Software

Hi ddrummer8, thanks for the response.

My comparisons are based on Adobe Audition 3 & Cubase 5, (probably unfairly) as I realise that PT SE comes free with my M Audio C400, so obviously it is a light version. At the moment I still haven't found the mixing facility. But With Audition 3 & also CB 5 I was able to trial them. I respect your advice about PT 9 or 10, but I would not consider to buy without a trial of any software.

Do you mean to use both my xlr inputs one for the DI and the other xlr to mic-up the acoustic also, I will have a play around with that suggestion. I am a novice to singing and playing and can only play & sing at the same time. But I will try that out

Thank you once again for replying

regards

Alan

I don't know Se, but click on 'window' from your menu bar.

Amongst other things you should see 'mix' and 'edit'
These are the two primary windows is pro tools.

Shortcut for mac is apple and +/=.

Hi Steenamaroo, thanks for your response, re PT SE

In the PT SE windows menu bar there is midi & score editors, loops, movie and system usage... thats it.

I think we have to use the same controls that is already within the recording session, i.e. the same controls used to set your recording parameters are the same controls for mixing, I've been expecting to find a seperate mixing box.

Looks like I've been looking for something thats not there. using these controls for mixing are not easy... if you try to move the sliders the adjustment control is not very accurate.

Thanks again for your help, I am looking at a trial of the other PT systems but paying for an ilok for a trial is something I am reticent about doing, but I will see how I go on. For me a deaf person, the volume and clarity of the instrument is a bonus and I'm keen to try to get used to PT. I think I can work with it more comfortably

Best Regards

Alan

AAH yeah, i see what you mean.

I looked up a few vids and it seems there is to separate mix window,

Just little faders at the left side of the edit view.

That sucks man; Sorry.

Yeah the mix situation seems pretty limited, but as far as the mic'ing, I was referring to maybe lay down a track of acoustic DI and mic'ed with the 58 then sing over top separately. But if you feel more comfortable singing and playing at the same time then just stick it out that way for a bit and eventually doing them separately will be no problems.

I don't know why they don't offer a trial, I guess they assume who needs to trial the industry standard? but when software costs 500+ dollars I understand why you want to trial it. I've tried other programs, but Pro tools for me had the best workflow and user interface, so it is worth getting into.

I had a trial of Pro Tools 9 that they kept extending.

I had bought it though and there was somekind of hold up; Maybe they don't have a public trial..IDK.
