I'm trying to get PTFree to work on my PC so I can get familiar with the program, because we just got a PT rig at my church and I'd like to be able to set it up to record our worship band while we practice on the weekend, but unfortunately the sound guy who normally does the setup for us doesn't really know anything about PC recording...

I'm trying to import a wave file and play it (simple task, no?... At least that's what I thought... ) but whenever I press play, I get this error message...

"The operating system held off interrupts for too long. If this occurs often, try increasing the "H/W Buffer Size" in the Hardware setup panel. (-9092)"

But when I go into the setup panel the buffer only goes up to 8192 samples, not 9092.

I have a pretty fast PC, (Athlon 2100+, 512MB RAM, running Win98SE) and I can't even play ONE track!!! Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this just because I don't have their $$$$ hardware?

Does anyone know how to get PTFree to work? I've done some searching on it and I've read that a lot of people have problems with it, but I didn't find anything similiar to the problem I'm having.... So if anyone can help me get this thing running, it'd be really appriciated! :)

Go to "Setups" in PT. Then select "Playback Engine" from there you will be able to select the "H/W Buffer Size" set it as low as you can. It should be "128 Samples" this will help you . I keep mine at 128 which means that I get virtually no latency and I dont get the error message you get. If it keeps screwing up try setting it to 256. and so on and so forth.

The (-9092) is an error code and not the number of samples to set the buffer at.

Are you importing that file from a CD or external drive? If so, try copying it to your harddrive and importing it from there. PT doesn't like reading its data off slow media.

This could also be caused by other programs (like virus protection or internet programs) running at the same time. Shut down every program you can and see if that helps at all.

Take care,
Chris

I've tried playing with all the buffer settings (from high to low and everything inbetween).... Just tried it again and still nothing!!

No, it was a wave file that I made from a previous project that was still right on the hard drive...

I also tried shutting everything down except for explorer and still the same thing!!!

by the way, having the hardware buffer size reduces interupt errors

But you should be able to use whatever buffer size you want with that machine. I used to run PT Free on an oldish dell 733, with 128 ram. So you're machine should be fine.

My thought would be some hardware you have that PT doesn't like.

I have an Aardvark Direct Pro, a Turtle Beach Montego, and the built in sound on my ECS K7S5A mother board that doesn't work (so I use my Turtle Beach in place of it).

I (try to) use my Turtle Beach card with PTF, but appearently it doesn't like it or something....

PT free is notorious for bugs. But trust me. the real version wont do that.

PT Free is probably the worst program ever, and that is not an exageration at all. There's just so many things that could make it go wrong.
