so it seems like the first few weeks i have had my new rig i have had a constant battle with crackle, and i dont like it. is pro tools just like this? i am running all my effects on aux tracks, and keeping them really low, but as soon as i start stacking the tracks up (4 or more) i start running into crackle problems. i cant get anything sounding loud, and i dont know why this is. is it just a digital thing i need to get used to or is there something i am missing?

i make sure none of my tracks peak when i record, though i like hot levels. all my aux tracks are turned all the way up, and i just control the amount of effect by using the send fader. the level coming through the auxes is WAY low... like down around -60 -40dB. i dont understand it.

i dont have my monitors yet, and i am monitoring through headphones, but i dont think its the phones, b/c even when i turn the level on the phones down, i can still hear the crackle over the music.

this is just getting old, and i dont know what to do... will it always be like this? any input?

Hey,
Could you please post more details about your setup?
ie.
Are you using a dedicated audio drive?
Are you using a dedicated firewire port for the 002 or daisychaining?
What else are you running in the background?
Virus checker off?
Are you running external digital inputs (ADAT or SPDIF) and if so how are you syncing? Clock set to ADAT/SPDIF or internal?
General details about your computer (G5 1.8 Dual?)
Make sure it matches everything on this page

In general, mess around with your buffer settings in setups.
Put your CPU meter on (Windows>CPU usage I think), are you pretty low, is it steady or do you get spikes?
