Hey everyone I am new here. I was hoping to get some non bias (ok, bias based on your experience) info about the above mentioned products, as well as other similar products in the same class.
After researching the DAW market I decided to foray into the computer world of studio recording. I am very glad that I did... I am planning on purchasing something along the lines of the aforementioned platforms/hardware. I am using windows xp on a Dell 4600.
Any general info would be greatly appreciated. Specifically too, however,
1) Are analogue inserts important to have on the breakout box in order to get good acoustic recordings?
2) Do any or all platforms allow for mix automation?
3) Which are better for accepting 3rd party plugins?
4) Are any platforms better than others in sound quality?
5) Is latency more of a problem with some than others?
ETC...
Thanks

1. I'm not sure what you mean *exactly* by inserts. If you're just talking about inputs, then yes, it's good to have them away from your computer. There are several reasons, sometimes just ease of use. But the extra noise added by the computer and close by electronics is also a concern.

2. Every software program I have used allows for automation over many aspects of the mix and recording process.

3. I think any of the programs that accept Dx plugins are the more versatile. Thats the one issue I have with Pro Tools. If you buy the plugins that really are meant to work with it, you can't use them in any other program, for instance Wavelab or Soundforge for editing/mastering.

4. Sound quality is very related to the soundcard and the converters with it, but the sound quality is subjective. People are inclined to tell you that what they own or use most often is the best and the rest isnt any good. I have used M-Audio, MOTU, and Digidesign gear and have liked all of it.

5. I don't think latency is evey an issue if you set up your system properly. I have never dealt with it because I use live monitoring anyways.

As for your list, check out the MOTU 828 also. I use it every day and really like it.

by the way, WELCOME to homerecording.com :)

Thanks for your reply H2H.
I have been checking out the MOTU 828. It has moved to the top of the list, but I am still looking at the 002Rack, due to the high numbers of Pro Tools studios out there (ie. Lots of EZ inter-studio file sharing).
So you live off of I-75? I am guessing Atlanta GA...

Hey man-

Actually I do stuff between Knoxville and Cincinnati mainly, with some trips to nashville then and again. I used to make trips to Atlanta on a monthly basis when I was doing computer training before I started working in music production, but I havent been there for a few years now.

I just was between the 002 and the 828, also. I just bought the current 828 about 2 months ago or so. I had used the older version in the past, and like the mk2 even more. But I think I would be nearly as happy with the 002. The one point that actually sold me most I think, was that Sonar is alot better at working with MIDI than Pro Tools is. And I like to use one program for everything since im lazy. If you don't use MIDI I would probably go with the 002, but if you do the 828/Sonar route can be pretty convincing. Like you said, the compatibility is great with the 002, if you work in multiple studios that use pro tools, it makes the world a better place.:) I'll probably kick myself at some point cause lots of the guys I work with use PTHD. But I'm happy for now.

Good luck!

hey..thats awesome. i live in the Nati...off I75..ha!

i got a question...what if I rather use Vegas 5 instead of ProTools LE when I get the 002RACK. Is this even an option? I've never used a firewire device, but I'm thinking I should be able to do everything with the 002rack right in Vegas too..am i wrong? ha.

You can use the 002 with several different recording apps, it includes drivers to do so.

We Cincy boys should get together sometime, there are several in KY too, we could set up our own jammyfest! I actually live in KY now, but lived in lovelend my whole life until i moved here.

The guys I work with in Cincy are the guys from BUOS. I do some at EMOSIA's place too with him, as well as Jeff Pence's Front Street studio. Admittedly, I havent been up there in a while, but I'm going to head up in about a week or so to make the rounds.

yeah there really is a lot goin on in the nati. ha.

i'm basically a younger kids' band's dream to record with i think. just cuz a lot of the kids already know me, etc. and i guess i'm also cheaper/more basement (literally) than other studio(s).

but I'd love to get big time. haha. if anyone ever needs an intern, please write down my emails.... I'm goin to school for electrical engineering/music production-recording in a few months for the next 4 years. but in the meantime internships would own...to get some real experience farther than i already have.

anyway, you guys know about www.neussubjex.net/bored ? it's a message board that basically the punk rock/hardcore scene uses. I advertise there quite a bit, most of the guys are funny. ha.
