Close-miking gives you proximity effect. You can reduce it going to disk, or you can deal with it in the mix.

Pros close mic things. How do pros deal with proximity effect?

Proximity effect is only for cardioid mics... you can use an omni or 8 figure pattern... or a lo cut filter where needed in the cardioid...

I would think that the pros are close-miking with cardiods because they want to use the proximity effect. Adds a bit more beef to the stew. Just an idea.
