Pro Audio Soundcard

I want to buy a good soundcard to record with. I want to know whether I should buy a firewire based or usb based soundcard. I have a p4 laptop 1.5 ghz with 512 memory so computer specs shouldnt be such an issue. Im looking to get a good soundcard with pro results. Get me some suggestions, nothing exceeding 700.

What are you going to be recording?

Need to first figure out how many inputs you need. And then decide if you want an interace with built in pre's or use a mixing console...or stand alone pre's/

Firewire will always be faster than usb-1.0.
