Hi, I got your addy off your website and was wondering if you could help me. I have a recording software program that used to allow wonderful audio recording where my mixer hooked into my soundcard from TAPE OUT to LINE IN. I bought a "better soundcard" and now am having problems. Here is a copy of the post I have been sending around for help:

Hi all, newbie here. Whenever I record audio through my mixer, my only
output option is TAPE IN/OUT with RCA plugs. (I have a Eurorack MX802A by
Behringer). However, when I plug in the RCA cords from the mixer out to the
soundcard, my main level immediately go skyrocketing even before anything is
recorded or transmitted. As soon as I plug in the cord, the level changes
and the result of audio recording contains static and popping! I have
played with the levels/sound EQ, recording level, etc. with no help! My
soundcard is a brand new mp3+ soundblaster from creative labs. It is
frustrating to not be able to recording audio with "ProAudio"! MIDI
capabilities work fine. Is there anything I am not doing right? Before I
bought this new soundcard this was never a problem.

Thanks,

Ken

My setup is : Soundcard OUT to mixer IN
Mixer OUT to LINE IN

It sounds like possibly your new soundcard contains a built-in preamp.

What connections are you connecting to on the Sound Card? Line In? If you care connecting to Mic In, then retry it using the Line In connection.

If you are connected to Line In, you might want to read the instruction manual and see if there is a pre-amp in the Line In port. If so, there should be some means of adjusting it. Probably through the Windows recorder, or SB software Mixer.

Essentially, if this is the case, you are amplifying the signal twice, once through your mixer, and again through your sound card. You're going to have to reduce the gain somehwere.

Anyway, just a guess.

thanks, i tried using both the MIC IN and LINE IN with the same result, only the MIC IN had a built in preamp but not the line in. thanks for the try, though

You might want to make sure you have your mixer turned on, before you turn on your computer. I sometimes have the problem of all my levels on my layla pegging out if I turn on the layla after my computer is on. At that time I can't get the levels to reset. So I shut down, start layla then fire up the computer.

 You probably got a feedback signal...

Here you go...

Run signal 1 (L) to be recorded to channel 1 of your mixer. Pan (balance) it to hard L. Open the Aux send 1 knob, close Aux send 2 knob.
Run signal 2 (R) to be recorded to channel 2 of your mixer. Pan (balance) it to hard R. Open the Aux send 2 knob, close Aux send 1 knob.

Then
Mixer Aux send 1 --> Soundcard Line in L
Mixer Aux send 2 --> Soundcard Line in R

You may need special Y cable to make this connection.

Soundcard Line out L to channel 3 of your mixer, CLOSE BOTH Aux send 1 & 2 of this channel.
Soundcard Line out R to channel 4 of your mixer, CLOSE BOTH Aux send 1 & 2 of this channel.

Route your Mixer main out to PA & monitor.

In computer, open the SB mixer application (or Windows mixer by double clicking icon yellow speaker near taskbar's clock). Mute the Line in to avoid feedack. Click Options --> Properties --> Recording. Select Line in.

Go to your Cakewalk, arm the audio track to record...

Back here for more...
