Via these forums I have been collecting a DAW setup. I have or am getting [some elements are in progress] a RYO 1.4GHz, 512,SCSI. SB Live and GigaSampler for soundfonts. 2 C1's and a DaviSound TB-3.

My question is on what software to start. I actually have PA 9 but have not used it. I will need lots of help when that time comes. But based on a SINGLE criterion of which will be the EASIEST to learn would I be better off staying with the PA 9 or upgrading to Sonar or Sonar XL? I need for it to be as easy as possible. All help greatly appreciated.

Well, there is going to be a steep learning curve on both programs.

You are going to have to learn Sonar eventually, so it might as well be now.

Do you have the capital to purchase Sonar?

If the answer is "yes", then get it. If the answer is "no", you will have to use Cake 9.

p.s. Neither one of these programs is "EASIER". ;)

Thanx for the reply. I do at the moment have the necessary exchecker. So would be inclined to get Sonar XL for the reason you mentioned [just one learning].

I would be interested if you or others know of "easy" software for sequencing MIDI and audio. I intend to have rythm and chords a la MIDI and tenor and vibes as live audio.

I'm a seasoned computerite [circa Cal Berkley 1960] just want the beginning phase to be as easy as I can make it -=- just getting started is about to overload my narrow attention span!

i wouldn't get sonar xl unless i just had to have those plug ins or loops....it is cheaper to get basic sonar....however, the extra stuff with xl is fun to play with....good luck!

sonar xl

i got sonar xl about a week ago. i upgraded from home studio 9. a HUGE difference. many things to play with on there. i only record audio, but there is so much stuff for midi, its unbelievable... a bit overwhelming at first and scary, but then it becomes comfortable.
i tried using home studio after a few days and things just seem to come out better with sonar xl.
the only thing i miss, and maybe i just havent figured out how to do it yet is, the ability to slide a whole section of audio over.
in the audio screen on home studio 9, i could just highlight it and slide it over, but with xl, i dont think it can be done this way. maybe a seasoned veteran can help me out with it.
but anyway, i havent played with the loops and stuff yet...

...Actually, spacedye, you can. You might want to tinker with the snap-to-grid settings (downbelow, to the right), but other than that, you can slide audio the same way as you do in Home Studio or PA.
Or you must be talking about something else:D

actually, when you double click a selected piece of audio; now you are looking at just a small clip of audio; with home studio 9, i used to be able to click and hold on it and slide it either left or right, as much as i wanted. with XL, i dont think thats possible. am i incorrect? i hope not.....

snap-to-grid

TABNAK,
your idea helped me out with another problem ive been having. wondering why i can only jump to the specific beats that they have set up for us in the main audio view. now with your suggestion, i can jump to any point in the song.
now if only someone will reply to my other problem of not being able to slide audio around in any direction at any point within a beat, that would help alot......

hi bob,i guess it depends on your tolerance for pain. i upgraded pre-release even, and love xl. tassman was the reason i went for the xl. that said new program and new computer can be a pretty volatile combination so my advice would be to stay with pro audio for now then upgrade when your new system is bug free and rockin and sonar is a little more mature. i guess if your loadin your box with 2000 or xp that might change things.

Thanx

Keith: Thanx for the reply. I do a bunch of computing otherwise and am setting my PC to dual boot Me for business software and 2000 for audio. By the time they are on different drives [SCSI for music, IDE for other] I don't see a whole bunch of difference between this an two PC's. BH
