i'm using direct pro 2496 with pro audio 9.03, and when i start a new project and try to set bit depth to 24, pro audio shows a message stating that my drivers are not compatible with that setting, even though i CAN set the direct pro to 24 bits. can anyone help me?

adriano

The only thing I can think of would be to see if the direct pro has any settings that you need to change. If it is locked at another bit depth or bit rate that is different from what you are changing in cakewalk, it will give u that warning. But besides that i have no clue.

i came home on friday to find it working perfectly. the error message miraculously disappeared.:)
a few hours later i found out i'll have to get ANOTHER soundcard to play midi sounds, since the direct pro doesn't do that. great.

You don't have to get another card to play MIDI sounds. You have several other options. You could get an external MIDI module or keyboard. Or you could try some software synths.

That said, a Sound Blaster Live or a Turtle Beach Montego card makes a great cheap MIDI instrument

just in case you say yes, i have a bunch of softsynths demos on a cd, which one would you recommend?

adriano

Yes.

But it might not be an adequate solution for playing along with your audio recording in real-time via MIDI... you probably need SONAR and WDM drivers, or Cubase or Logic and ASIO drivers, to manage that.

I don't have any favorite softsynths. The only one I have that I will probably use a bunch is Tassman DXi, and I haven't had a chance to figure out how to use it yet. At some point I'm likley to get a good sampler like Gigastudio, but I'll probably dedicate a second computer to it if I do.

i decided to get a sb live. i have another computer which i think i'll upgrade and use for gigastudio too. but i think i can use gs with cakewalk in the same computer for a while, as long as there aren't too many tracks/plugins going on at the same time. now what i need is a cheap controller keyboard (hey, i'm a guitar player!).

postalblue,

Hey, I'm a guitar player too!

A few years back, when I was first trying to do this, after borrowing a couple of keyboards temporarily, I bought a Fatar controller keyboard with 66 weighted keys... it's pretty nice. I think they go by the name StudioLogic now. I noticed that Midiman now has a small keyboard that acts as a MIDI interface too, and connects to the USB port. Roland makes some inexpensive controller keyboards too..

There are times, though, when I wish I just had a nice synth and didn't have to turn on my PC and launch some software to be able to fiddle with it.

By the way, I see by your profile summary that you're in Brazil... some of my favorite music comes from Brazil (Virginia Rodriguez, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Jobim, Bola Sete, Airto and Flora...)

hey,

i'm a lousy guitar player (i can't play any solos, but i do kick ass at comping and brazilian/jazz stuff), my thing is songwriting, and singing. i also produce my band's recordings, and from now on i'll engineer and get my dirty little fingers on every part of the process.

i'll start looking for a midi keyboard now, and i think i'll go with the cheapest one, but probably not the tiny 49 keys ones. i almost got a bunch of synths this year on ebay, but fate had other things in order for me, i guess. i almost got a couple combo organs too, but that didn't work out either. i took all the money i had saved for that, and set up my daw with monitors, mixer, mics and stuff.

that should save me some aggravation now that we're going to record a full length, and actually we do have a lot to do with brazilian music, even though it's an indiepop act.

cheers,
adriano
ps.: if you haven't heard djavan yet, go get it, he's amazing

Well, I'm a lousy guitar player too (I can play solos as long as the harmony doesn't move around too much and too fast... wish I could comp in a kick-ass manner, but I'm getting there).

Looking forward to hearing your stuff... good luck with the project...

Will look into Djavan...

cool.
i've go sound samples on http://www.indiepages.com/postalblue, but i didn't produce/engineer those recordings.
i can usually solo over simple chord progressions, but most of the time it sounds like peter buck (maybe because i play a rick 360 too).

take care,
adriano
