Do I have to enter values in the piano role, to make the session drummer work?
The manual seems to say that you can program a pattern, without entering any notes or values in the piano role.

I loaded session drummer in the aux effects.
Then I selected a patern and hit play, but no tunes.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Tom

You don't need to use Piano Roll View to use Session Drummer.

Do you have a Midi device to create the sounds? IOW, are you able to produce other MIDI sounds besides Session Drummer?

If so, then tell us specifically how you have the track set up. You may need to set it to channel 10 to get percussion sounds.

Thank you for the reply!

I found another post with the same problem, only the answers are for Sonar.

q. How do you write a song or a pattern from session drummer to a track

The help said

1 arrange pattern the way you want
2 open the track view
3 Patch session drummer into a track and create a song
4 select the track
5 open the console view and click the FX icon

This is my problem

#1 is ok
#2 is ok
#3 how do you patch session drummer to a track ?
#4 is ok
#5 I cant find any FX icon in the console view ?

Yes I can add midi sounds from the piano role, I just can't get a pre made pattern from Session Drummer.

Thanks
Tom

#3 how do you patch session drummer to a track ?

Open the Console View and right click on a Midi Track in the FX Bin area (the black square). Then follow the menu choices until you see Session Drummer.

However, if you are already able to use Session Drummer, it sounds like you have already patched it to a track. :)

You are not going to see any midi patterns in the track (or in piano roll view) until you "apply" session drummer. (Apply Midi Effects.) However, you don't need to in order to work with it. Usually you only apply once you are satisfied with the results - or when you need to tweak it on your own using PRV.

BTW, the help from the other post doesn't make much sense to me.

LOL! But only because he is using PA9. In Sonar the console view is no longer needed.

Did you hear that, moskus? :)

It's been awhile since PA9 but I dont remember using the dreaded console view to patch the Session drummer.
As I recall there was a small effects window inside each track.
Clicking the window would open a menu of available effects.
Clicking on the effect would assign it to the track.
Session drummer works on midi tracks only.

Session drummer in PA9 must have an output, such as a keyboard or drum machine.PA9 does not support real time softsynth playing unlike Sonar.

You don't need to set an input on the midi track,as the SD will provide the data required to drive a sound module.(drum machine, keyboard, softsynth)

Clicking on the gear icon in SD will bring you to a menu. From there you pick the output port and channel, these must correspond with the input device..(drum machine, keyboard, softsynth)

When you open session drummer on the left there will be a list of categories, clicking on these will bring up a list of patterns in that categories.

If you highlight a pattern in the right box and push play, you can preview a pattern without assigning it to your current song, provided you have everything hooked up properly.

I'm assuming you know how to set the tempo.?

From there it's important to save each song within SD and a preset for the "settings" menu would'nt hurt as each time you open SD it reverts to it's default settings.

Applying effects
The big advantage to this is you don't have to open SD each time a project is reloaded and reload the song.Plus you can use a split to tracks command and put each drum on it's own track.

The advantage to not applying effects is that it's much easier to change your drum track around from within SD.
