a friend of mine suggested that buying an old fd-8 would be perfect for my budget and a good place to start in recording. could someone tell me what is a good price to pay for a fd-8

I paid $350 for mine. Over the last few months I've seen ebay prices go from $300 up to $500. The biggest factor being whether an intertnal HD is included or not. Personally I don't care for the internal HD option... laptop HD. I use a fast external SCSI HD and back up to either SCSI Zip or SCSI Jaz.

Either way, the FD-8 is an excellent machine. Highly under rated.

i paid 500 for mine. hard drive included. i agree it is a great machine. only thing i don't like is that you are limited to two track simultaneous recording. it's very limiting.

I've increased mine to 4 with SPDIF or 8 with ADAT.

Fostex FD8

I'm interested in picking up a used FD8, but I have two questions:

1. Does it matter what sort of storage device is used? Is one preferable to another?

2. How hard/easy is it to put a finished work onto CD?

Thanks.

Here's a link for the Fostex confirmed media list:

I've used a SCSI zip 100, zip 250, jaz, and scsi HD's. I highly recommend using a SCSI HD and backing up to a SCSI Zip 250.

You can find used SCSI HD's on ebay for cheap. I picked up 2 2.5 giggers for $30. That's more than enough space. I also back up to a zip 250. Projects can span zip disks, too which is a very handy feature.

What's needed to put a FD8 project on to CD?

probably an FD8 and a blank CD... ;)

You'll need to mixdown to a PC or transfer your tracks to the PC and do the mixd there.

Another option is a stand-alone burner... but you'll still need to mixdown somewhere for the best results.

The best way is to get an audio card with ADAT i/o. That way you can transfer 8 tracks at a time in the digital domain without having to go through a conversion stage.

The next best way is to get a card with 4 in/out. You can send up to 4 audio tracks at a time using the FD-8's line-out and the monitor out using the aux sends. Theoretically you could also use the SPDIF optical out as well.

Last but not least is sending 2 tracks at a time. Either from the line out, monitor out, or SPDIF out.

What program do you use to mixdown with JR?

I transfer all of my tracks to the PC via ADAT connection and do most of my mixing in either Cool Edit Pro, Samplitude, or Nuendo.

three cheers to JR for being the number one contributor to this thread. thanks for the good help!

Hey JR,
While you're in "information mode".;) can you reccomend an ADAT/SPDIF capable sound card that wont cost me an arm and a leg?I have the VF-16 but Im still mixing down to analog through the 1/8 strereo jack on my factory peice of crap sound card....not getting the most out of my recorder, thats for sure. Thanks man.

I have an FD-8 for sale

I'm looking to sell my FD-8 with external drive. I've had it for 3 years. I don't record for a living, and this machine hasn't been used a whole lot. Probably300 hours max.

It IS a great machine for the price. Sounds very clean. Besides stereo drums, I record only one track at a time, so it works fine for me. The only other limitation for me is, during mix down, you can only use one effect box PER TRACK. Sometimes I get around that by laying down an effect as I record the track- if I know I want to commit to that effect.

I'm not on e-bay, I've been looking at other machines for a while and have just now decided to sell the FD-8. If anyone is interested, e-mail me at conagraken1@aol.com

I just picked up a Terratec EWS88D for $150 off of Ebay. That card is very good.. XP drivers, Gigasampler drivers, ASIO, etc... and it provides 2 more MIDI i/o channels. The Event EZ8 looks pretty decent, too at $179. If you're looking to spend less than that, you can try and find the Korg 1212 on ebay. I"m not sure if they still support that discontinued card though. But you can find them for under $100. The Frontier Wave Center is a good one if you can find the PCI instead of the ISA version. I've seen a few Creamware and Sonorus cards here and there and prices vary. Hope that helps.

That gives me plenty of souncards to start checking out.Off to e-bay!

Thanks man!:)
