Price Reduction

First, please do not mistake this for a direct attempt to sell you something (although I'm sure some will think this is nothing but such an attempt ).
I learned some interesting information last week that I think might help some folks who frequent this forum and it has to do with $$$$$.
I spoke Wednesday with Bob Reardon of Sonic-Distribution at length about the physics/science re: the sE Reflexion Filter and in that conversation he shared with me that the sE Gemini and sE Z5600A will be updated for 2007.
Thus the current $1499 Gemini is now selling for $999 and the current $899 Z5600A is selling for $649. Prices are reduced until Dec.31.
One primary change he shared will be an updated power supply which will reduce overall noise.
He also said that the new power supplies will be available for current mics at some point.
So, that is the information I learned.

SE are about the ONLY Chinese mics I think are worth a sneeze. They're built very well and sound good. And they're actually NOT knock-offs of someone else's designs (well, except the time they tried to make a Royer R121 ribbon and Royer stepped in and said very loudly, "Oh no you don't!")

I understand that they are Chinese manufactured, but I'm not clear which factory does them. I own a couple of the older US made mics - which are great (MD1a and MD3), as well as a couple of the Alesis/M-Audio era mics (AM-40/GT-44, AM52, AM-30), which I think are pretty good for the money - especially the AM-40/GT-44. GT has generally done their own design work and historically seems to be pretty good on the quality control side of things. They've also been in the business longer than lots of other vendors of Chinese mics. On the other hand, their pricing structure for the current crop of mics has appeared to drop and I'm not sure whether that is a function of increased competition or a cheapening of the product. I was not terribly impressed with their reissue of the MD1 (the MD1b) in comparison to the original and haven't used any of their other newer mics. Other than GT and buying one MXL LD mic at the Mars liquidation, I've generally not purchased or used any of the Chinese manufactured mics so I don't have a good basis of comparison.

I'm curious as to your opinion if you've got one.

So which mic do you use for trombone? I used to play, many, many moons ago.

I am not drew (but I know him). If you are talking about Groove Tubes, I have a GT44 tube SD mic that is flat out one of the best sounding mics for many sources that I have heard yet. I have no experience with the others, but the GT44 is a surprisingly good mic for Guitars, snares, toms etc.

The only place it does'nt shine is (as expected) vocals. If I come accross another one in my travels, I will buy it hands down.

I have no problem with this as he has fully disclosed his relationship with the company and it is recording related. I would consider it spam if he posted it in multiple forums, but I think one post is not crossing any lines.

I actually wasn't debating whether his post is spam or not. I merely noted that he fully disclosed his relationship with SE Electronics because your post appeared to suggest an undisclosed relationship.

Personally, I don't mind gear pimp participation on these kinds of boards as long as everyone knows who they represent. Lord knows Fletcher is entertaining enough on the GS board. I'd agree, however, that this particular forum probably isn't the best location for announcing a price reduction when you represent the company, and that the classified section might be more appropriate. He's been pretty reasonable about it though - it's not like he appears to do this often or uses multiple posting. I also suspect that it's unlikely to happen again.

One of the things that I respect about how Fletcher and Warhead (not that they give a rats ass about my respect) post is that they are dealers for multiple companies and have expressed strong opinions about many different brands, products, etc. I've seen them recommend one model of a brand they carry over another model of a different brand that they carry. That aspect of their postings seems to lend more credibility and to give a sense of increased impartiality to their postings IMHO.

Edit: Plus, they kind of post from the perspective of being Gurus of gear. They can recommend things or advise against things based on extensive personal use of a wide range of filthy, slutty gear.

Of course I can clearly see where this could be borderline and that is why I clarified it right up front.
A question! If I found out that Reflexion Filters were going to go on sale for $200 would you or anyone else want to know?
If I learned from my old friend, Mike Torlone at AKG, that new C414's were going to be reduced by $200-$300 bucks, you can bet your ass I'd be sure to get that information on here whether I sold them or not AND I would expect the same of others on this forum to do the same because sharing information like that is what forums are for.

FYI, Cardio, the sE TITAN is my mic of choice for trombone.

However, U-2, Aerosmith, Faith Hill, Circue de Soleil, Guy Chambers, Steve Levine, Eric Valentine, Paul Barrett, Courtney Pine, Paul Borg, Sidh Solanki, Geoff Dugmor, BT, Daddy’s House Recording Studio, Westlake Audio, Jeff Berlin, Laco Deczi, and Babyface use sE products in light of their sucking eggs and sounding like all the other chinese knock-offs.

Reduced price should be in the tens of dollars for these wondermics.

So a $100 or $250 price reduction is too much?

Perhaps not the best place to post in retrospect.
However, I havent asked you to buy anything and I won't.
You must decide who to buy from on your own. I cant do that for you.
I'm just letting you know the fact that there are price reductions on some well respected mics.

I have forwarded many folks on forums to touch base with him about sE and other recording equipment.

In fact both of them will recommend gear that they don't carry over gear that they do if they think it is more appropriate to the situation at hand. That's a major reason they have such cred on the boards that they frequent.

Before tossing out names of people using mics in order to defend said mics, you should really find out what they used them for. More importantly, do they really use them? Or have they just used them? There is a HUGE difference between the two. I have dealt with waaaay too many endorsees to put too much faith in endorsements. Especially endorsements for "more affordable" gear.
