I'm having some trouble with my presonus firebox. the clipping light will never turn on. I turn the gain up all the way, and it won't turn on. So I have no idea how much gain to use. So, whats the problem? If you don't know the problem, well how much gain should I use? Im using a 57 if that helps.

Also, is cool edit pro free? Would it be worth it switching from Cubase LE to that?

There are two firewire outputs on the back of the unit --- try hooking it up to the other one. I have a Firebox and had a similar problem when I first got it.

You can clip the signal on the FireBox with a SM57 but you really have to crank up your amp (assuming your recording guitar/bass) I have used a 57 on my cab and had to crank the gain practically all the way up to get a hot enough signal. You can go into the FireBox Control and check the +12 dB box and you'll get a hotter signal(yet your gain will still be about 3/4 of full tilt) The pre's on the FireBox just arent incredibly sensitive.

If you want a hotter signal I would suggest to either try a condenser mic (either small diaphram(SDC) or large diaphram(LDC) will work well and you can get one for cheap if you so choose) or you could get another preamp and plug in the ouput of the preamp into the line ins on the back of the FireBox. Either one of these options will give you a hot enough signal that you can clip the input signal.

Also, I believe there is a free trial demo download of cool edit pro.

You shouldn't have to have a meter to tell you how much gain you need. Just use your ears, they seem to work beter than meters anyway.

Wow. This is the fastest response I've gotten here. Thank you very much :)
