presonus firepod VS tascam fw-1804

Hey, sorry for all my threads, i'm new on the forum so I let go all my questions haha ! So I have a Presonus Firepod and I want to plug a compressor on it. There's no inserts on it to plug a compressor, and I don't want to buy a mixer. So I saw the firewire interface Tascam FW-1804, that has already inserts on the first four channels, so i can plug my compressor direct on it. But how do you compare the Tascam FW-1804 with the Presonus Firepod ? For sure I will buy 8 preamps with the FW-1804 cause There are only four on it and I heard they were not very great. So, taking in consideration my situation, what do you suggest to me ? Cause I want something that sounds good ! If you have another solution at all just tell me ! Thanks for taking time to read this, I really appreciate it !

i suggest running out of the preamp out of the firepod into the compressor and then back into the preamp in for each of the first 2 channels. granted you only get 2 channels of compression like this but it works. its not as nice as inserts on every channel like the tascam. i typically like to record with no effects anyway. a little bit of compression only if i think my source might clip the system. it won't stop it from clipping the preamp though. you can always add compression later. and if your doing that you can use one of the output busses to send a signal out of the firepod and back through channel 1 with the compressor. sorta like reamping a guitar, only your recompressing a track.

so thats my suggestion, if you want to keep the firepod. the other option to go with the 1804 instead would require getting new preamps. this can get pricey, but you might be able to get pre's better than those in the firepod anyway.

You can surely get better preamps for more money than the Firepod, but I tell ya what...the Firepod's got it goin' on for the money. I'm amazed by what this little box can do for the price. The only part of it that seems to suck is the headphone amp, noisy and not real natural sounding.

I made some clips with a Firepod, pretty clumsy procedure as I had to keep walking across the room and adjusting the preamps while trying to track drums with it...! But I made this drum clip with my Dell laptop and a Firepod and nothing else.

Seriously, not a bad box and the drivers have been solid on this Dell too.

Pretty good sounding for using zero processing with the stock pres.

And yeah, I use outboard pre's with my firepod all the time.
 
I gotta admit I'm more surprised by the low latency I was able to acheive as well as the sound. I had no problems getting down to 3ms latency on this POS "Inspiron 1000" laptop using a $29 Firewire PCMCIA card. Don't know if others have had great luck with the drivers as well but it's been flawless thus far. I grabbed one to record a local church choir gig without carrying down 500 pounds worth of stuff to do it!
