Now to introduce myself, I am an experienced bass player and I have been to recording studios before to do recordings that I've been asked to do. I've done a good amount of recording in studios however I want to begin my own one.

The first thing i thought when I found this forum was that there would be a LOT for me to learn about what certain equipment does. I understand some aspects of it but there are simple things which I still haven't been able to find answers to.

I will start firstly with the Presonus Firepod.

Anyone have any opinions on this?

As I have understood it, you can feed 8 mics into it simultaneously and then use a firewire to put the live recording onto a computer.

Now it sounds like it could work simple enough but for only £450 I feel very suspitious that there is some sought of catch with this though.

So my question about this product is that, is it as simple as plugging in microphones into this device and recording through a firewire onto recording software?

Ok. Here are some other questions which I can't seem to get answered..

How necessary is a mixer? Is it possible to use software such as Logic instead to mix and master the sound?

The Firepod is generally very highly thought of around here. I have one myself. The preamps are solid and it offers a lot of flexibility for the price. You can actually daisy-chain 3 of them together for 24 simultaneous inputs.

A mixer is not necessary. Some use them, but I believe most don't. I don't.

Hope this helps.

i own a firepod and i like it a lot. it comes bundled with cubase LE which has a software mixer. however, and correct me someone if im wrong, but can you even record 8 tracks at a time in the LE version of cubase? I bought the upgrade so i dont know.

Ya man the firepod rocks. Cubase Le is also very good software to start with. You can record 8 tracks at a time, have real time automation, eqs, send and effects. I have used Cubase SX3, and le is really similar, i heard someone say LE is 70-80% of it. I used to use Pro Tracks that came with my lexicon omega,, and that program was horrible. Go for the firepod man, you will be very satified, its an all in one complete recording studio, just supply good equipment and some good plugins. Also look on the presonus website to hear a live recording with Tower of Power, recorded with the whole presonus rig, the firepod, central stations and two euerkas. It sold me! I am also a bass player, and the firepod is a great deal IMO, and i was finally able to get my studio up and running.

agree, i bought firepod after returning horrible mackie 400f. BIG IMPROVEMENT. i like it alot...

how is the 400f horrible?

24 pages of messages on harmony central about the 400f, alot of which are about its problems. copied and pasted my experience below, i was not alone.

"I could work around the 4 inputs in the back having no volume by using a blue tube,

i could work around the horrible midi latency that is posted frequently by going back to my midiman sport thing that cost 30 bucks,

i could work around the drivers dissapearing randomly by restarting the unit and/or pc,

but today something that happened that i can't work around. about a quarter of the time, when i turn down the control room monitors, i hear pop pop pop! oh well, just something else.. anyway, today i went to turn down control room voume and KA-BOOM!!! sounded like a 44 magnum at point blank range."

wow, what an introduction into digital recording... firepod is without issue.... very consistent.

hey man!!..i always think about that, what ya said about hooking up 3 firepods to records 24 tracks?...is it possible?..do i need more firwire ports?..i have 2 firewire ports..?...do i need a bigger gig a bits of ram and size of p.c?...i have 1gig of ram and 250 memory.

yes you can

yes you can record 8 tacks on there with cubase le....

go to Devices then go to VST inputs put them all on active. then assign them to channels 1-8 depends on howmuch ya need..you can assign them by going to the mixer then clicking on the in1 in2 in 3 in4 in 5 in 6 in7 in8, assign each in like example"in 5 will be in 5"

I didn't have most of these problems, but I know a lot of folks did have issues with the 400F. The only problem I ever had was for the first week or so the playback audio would suddenly cut out and I would actually have to reinstall the drivers to get the sound working again! Then one day BAM! - it was solid and never gave me any more trouble.

I liked mine pretty well, but in the end I just felt like it was time for a change.

I would still very much recommend the 400F as an interface. The Firepod is pretty solid overall, but the new Mackie Onyx preamps are a major step UP from the Presonus.

agree, when it works. i was going to get another one until i read about people that were on their 4th unit. being a newbie is hard enough but throw in tweaky interfaces and loud booms, and it really got overwhelming for me.
