Okay so my band is working on a 9 song EP. We're doing everything ourselves besides mastering. After we get the master copy from the mastering house and we have the material copyrighted, the photography, artwork and CD insert design all taken care of and ready to be sent off to the CD replication company, what else needs to be done? I've read about making up a ficticious music publishing company name somewhere, like how Chris Cornell of Soundgarden had "In One Ear And Out Your Mother Music", or something like that. Is it necesary to do this? We plan to have 1000 copies made to sell at gigs, in some local stores and worldwide through our website. What all needs to be done to make the release suitable for this without help from a label or distribution company?

brutha, based on your ascap ?, and then this post.....I am seriously recommending you go do some thorough research.....You obiviously don't understand the collection of royalties and copyrights at all based on your other question, so starting a publishing company and bein at all successful in bull shitting your way through it is the wrong way to approach this industry.....................................

Thats the reason I made this post, so I can maybe find help in where to start my research. This recording we're making started off as a demo, but we ended up re-recording our old stuff and we're gonna throw that in there too, and it became kind of a plan to do an EP, now theres 9 songs, so I dunno what you'd call it now. But I still need to know where to start my research. Can anybody recommend some good websites with good info to read up on?

Nothing. Just sell your cd. Any "troubles" you have will be because your band is frickin great and you have to collect royalties, etc. This is highly unlikely going to happen. And 1000 cd's is not going to bring in any decent sum of money to worry about anyway. Go play, have fun. Forget about the business end until somebody "big" takes notice.

I agree

GREAT ADVICE MISTERX!!!! I live in Nashville, tn and there's so much bullshit and empti promises from so called industry.
Just go play and have alot of fun, but definetely collect emails frompeople, so when you have enough in your area, you can use those emails to get fans to call into the collage stations to play your hit song and so on. When you're then ready, you can hire a girl for like $2k to call your songs in all over plus have the fans calling in as well and thus extend your following.

You should really learn about publishing and take it seriously.
Did Chris Cornell make up a fictitious music publishing company?
There is a legitimate Publishing company called "In One Ear And Out Your Mother Music".

Music Publishing is an area that artists seem to never really learn about, but it is pretty critical if your album gets played... it is really more critical if you sign to a bad publishing deal. It is not that hard to publish music yourself under whatever publishing company name you find. I have noticed that quite a few artists seem to be publishing their own music, and others get a publishing deal along with their record label... Like if you get a sony record deal... and a Sony publishing deal, which in my opinion isn't good, but then what do I know! I heave read a lot of horror stories about artists who signed away their publishing and lost a lot of money...

You might think, yeah, I worry about all that business when I get signed, but I think it is good to learn this business now, learn as much as you can so you know more when the time comes...

I have several books that give a lot of information on music publishing, how to start your own publishing company and why you should.
Books like:
The Musicians Business and Legal Guide.
Music Publishing 101
Music Publishing: The Real Road to Music Business Success

Check out the music section at a local Barnes and Noble...
Or there is always amazon.com

Ok this response is long enough!
Hope I helped!

There are also lots of great books out there. One that I would personally recommend, as it is one that I have read is "Breaking into the Music Business," by Alan H. Siegel. He goes into all of this in pretty fair detail.

Hey;

Some things just happen at the right time. Living in California, I don't know how easy a time you'll have accessing this.... maybe try the website when it is updated for the next issue.... but the latest Canadian Musician magazine has an article about this very topic. I received it in the mail just yesterday!!
