Hi, So I'm running my mic's and other inputs out of a live mackie mixer. Kinda using that as an audio interface as well. Is it necessary to buy a preamp?

You could certainly employ better preamps than those that are in your Mackie... But that's sort of up to you.

It's far from necessary. The inputs to your Mackie go directly into pre amps.

However, as Massive Master says, at some point you may CHOOSE to purchase one or more pre amps because you're dis-satisfied with the sound you're getting and/or you wish to modify the sound in some way.

That said, it's "horses for courses" and, unless you have excellent microphones and are willing to spend a fair bit of money on the pre amps, it's unlikely that budget pre amps will provide a significant improvement.
