Hi there!
I have a Neumann U87 that I run through a Midas XL42 to record vocals etc.
Now, this combination sounds AWESOME on female vocals, acoustic guitars etc, but when it comes to recording male vocals, they sometimes end up a bit muddy and bass-heavy. The reason, of course, is that both the Midas and the Neumann are what I would call "warm" equipment. :D

I'm thinking about either getting another high quality mic, or getting another preamp, and since I LOOOOVE the Neumann, I'll probably go for a preamp that's fairly "clean", i.e. neither "warm" nor "cold", so that I can enjoy the warmness of the Neumann on difficult male vocals.. :)

Any ideas as to what would be a good choice?

Thanks.

No to talk you out of a new preamp, but have you tried the EQ much on the Midas? maybe try the variable low roll off at about 80 with a small dip in the strip EQ at about 250?

yup

Well, the answer is in the title.. yup, tried it, and it still sounds kind of "muddy"...
I might also try a condenser mic like one of Sennheiser's MKH series, possibly the 40/50 model, that might actually help a lot, when I think about it... hmm..:)
I think I'll start a new thread in the microphone section on that, if anyone is interested or has comments.. ;)

Thanks for your replies so far guys, I will check out the pre suggested as well!

:)
