Hi all,

Up til now I have ran my vocal mic, guitar, or Drums and bass arrangements into my Peavey XR 600 mixer amp then take a line out (Tape Out) into the sound card and it works.

The only pre amp I have is an RP2000 Digitech guitar modeller which would be fine for vocals but no good for vocals OR line inputs etc.

Is the advantage of a pre amp for vocals, guitars etc that they dont add EQ to the sound?( Or minimal EQ, noise)

I am assuming my XR 600 adds EQ to everything but I hear everyone saying add EQ, effects, etc at the end.
In my case its too late because the mixer amps already " influenced " the sound.

In summing would a good pre amp help me and in all likely hood would it be a huge improvement on a 15 years old Peavey XR 600 giggng amp.

Cheers everyone

I thought the advantage of good pre-amps was that you get a good, clean signal to work with (as you can later destroy using EQ, effects, and so on).

I would say yes. I don't think a 15 years old Peavey gig-amp was ever meant to be in any recording-situation.

Or to get a tube preamp to add some character to the sound! (=destroy it? ;) )

Yup. A decent preamp will give you a more useable recording than the Peavey. The pres on the Peavey aren't designed for the kind of demands recording places on them.

Take care,
Chris
