PreAmp or Audio Interface - To Record Singing?
I was going to get one, but not sure what is needed to connect to my computer. I currently use a crappy mic and default plug in back and the quality is HORRIBLE.

Thanks in advance

preamp and audio interface are two different things. Be more specific, what do you have, what is your budget.

As the prior poster noted, you are confused as to the components required.

A soundcard (aka analog/digital/analog converter) is required and it may or may not incorporate a preamp (which takes the weak signal a microphone puts out and kicks it up to a line level signal).

An example of a 'pure' soundcard (one that just does the A/D/A conversion) is the M-Audio 2496. An example of a soundcard that includes mic pres (in this case two) would be the M-Audio 1010LT. The costs (respectively) brand new are approx. $100 and $200.

Providing a budget always helps narrow the recommendations.

I own the M-Audio 1010LT as Wheelema suggested, and I must say it has made a major improvement in vocals. If you want to take it one step further, I went out and picked up a BLUETUBE preamp (which has built in phantom for your condenser mics) and set my jumpers on the M-Audio card to line level, connected the stereo tube amp to the mic inputs, and WOW !!! Incredibly warm and clear tone. May sound strange, but it works like a champ. I only spent $200 on the tube preamp, so for about $400, you could really get some good vocals (works great for BASS, KICK DRUM, AND SNARE too!)
