I need a good Preamp for my RODE NTK Microphone.
I have $200 to spend.
Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Thanks

Check the section THE RACK right under the microphone section
the question you asked is in there on the first page along with many comments.

I have a pair of the VTB1's. Each a single channel. LOVE 'em! Others will recommend the M-Audio DMP3. Two channel unit @ $199.00.

i really liked the NTK through a neve 1272, but that's abit out of your price range. i am not aware of any inexpensive mic pres that are worth spending money on. i'd suggest sticking with something like the mackie pres until you can afford something that is significantly better. cheap pres with "tube" effects will generally degrade your sound more than help it. the least expensive mic pre that is an actual improvement over mackies is probably the FMR RNP.

Also, check this out...

"I have never heard a mic pre under $1,000 that sounds and acts like the VTB-1... Next time we'll be raising the bar by running the VTB-1 against Neve and API mic pres — two of the heaviest hitters in the audio industry. I've heard through the grapevine from some trusted industry sources that the VTB-1 recently took a little run with an Avalon 737 and didn't exactly lose the race...

If you're looking for your first external pre, you've found it. The question of whether to buy a solid state pre or a tube pre is history. If the pres you have didn't run you over a thousand dollars, you're not getting the sound that this unit delivers.

The VTB-1 is one of the most versatile mic preamps I have ever used, with a wide variety of sonic treatments, from transparent to beautiful warmth to bordering on tube insanity. If I was limited to recording an entire project with only one pre, I would seriously consider the VTB-1 for the task. The VTB-1 is certain to join the ranks as one of the most innovative audio products of the year."

That's a quote from Dan Richards -- Digital Pro Sound (review)

Your experience may vary, and again, for $200. you can go with the DMP3 that a lot of people really like.

Kinda' makes you wonder what drugs Dan was on when he did the review . . . and how I can score some. :D

The cheapest Mackie VLZ (1202) is $375. The DMP3 is$200, though I only paid $120 and you can get it for < $200.

The DMP3 is built around the Burr Brown INA 163 chip (same as the Grace 101), and it definitely out performs the Mackie VLZ pres IMO. The DMP3 is a very clean preamp with lots of quiet gain and very little distortion. It works equally well with my tube mic or my FETs. Unless you need the other features of a mixer, I'd definitely recommend a DMP3 over a Mackie VLZ pre. It's less expensive, and it sounds better.

Lot o' choices

There's a lot of choices, but the winner is.....
the M-Audio DMP3.
Anybody has a voice demo through a DMP3?

Thanks, guys
