Any thoughts between these setups?

1) $200 [$200 per channel]
Joe Meek Q3 (1 channel preamp/compressor) ($200)

OR

2) $300 [$150 per channel]
DMP3 (2 channel preamp) ($150)
dbx 266XL (2 channel compressor) ($150)

I want this to run my vocal chain (rock/metal), probably with an SM7B. Is the Joe Meek worth the extra $ per channel?

Thanks in advance.

vocal chain only? then, get an rnc for compression and maybe a rane pre or the dmp

I can't speak to the Joe Meek as I've never used one, but I'd use something (anything) else instead of the DBX 266XL. I have one, bought years ago, and its barely passable for live guitar work. Not really a recording box or for vocals IMHO. Mine lives in my guitar rack. I'd suggest an RNC which is a 2 channel stereo compressor (not 2 mono channels though) instead for vocals. Alternatives in your price range could also include 2 Symetrix 501s or 2 Symetrix SX 208s - both of these are discontinued, but show up used with pretty good frequency (which is how I bought mine). The 501 usually runs @$125 (single channel but stereo linkable with another 501) or so and the SX208 (which is a stereo comp - but not two mono channels) goes for @$50-75.

Consider an M-Audio Tampa. Nice clean transparent pre till it's pushed, then it gets tasty and a fantastic opto compressor and a digial output to boot. Now out of production so the price has really crashed.

Man, I thought I had one yesterday for $250 (slightly used), but somebody beat me to it. What sucks is I can't find anywhere that I can listen to one.

I have some stuff recorded through it HERE ...listen to STAR or PENNY or THE FEARSOME or APROACHING THREE....... all four are acoustic guitar and vocals recorded through the Tampa with a Studio Projects B1 mic. I'll be adding another Tampa to my rack as soon as my finances let me.

Good luck

Hey, nice work! Of course that's not the best way to audition a mic pre, but it's better than nothin. Sounds like your getting some good sounds out of the Tampa. I'm gonna keep looking for a deal on one. Thanks a lot.

Just ordered one myself - can't wait to get it and get to recording. I haven't really seen any bad comments on them - good reviews all over the net.

I got mine new for $329.00 shipped.

Lemon: like your tunes a lot! I think you got a great sound out of the Tampa.
