Pre-amp advice please

Ok. Here's a really basic question... if my signal is loud enough by going direct from, say, my electro-acoustic guitar into the digital multi-track, is that the PUREST signal i can get, or will a pre-amp change / boost / enhance the signal AND TONE of the guitar?

I always aim to keep the least links in the chain and just wondered about pre's making the quality any better than just DI'ing?

Digital multitrack, huh?
You mean a stand alone unit I guess. Boss? Fostex? (thanks for the info BTW)

The pres on those are not too bad. How they work in conjunction with the onboard compressor (if you have one) would be my other concern, but I've never used those newer units (haven't had a non-computer based system in 12 years)
In your case, I'd try a new mic first.
If you want more advise, just ask...or look through the archives, do a search...there are several good threads with hundreds of opinions to confuse you even more. ;)

OK, that's a whole different animal altogether.

That depends on what you're plugging it into on your DAW. You should be plugging it into an input designed for instrument level input, not mic or line input. If your DAW doesn't have that kind of in, or if it's instrument input just doesn't sound all that good, then the next step would be to get a decent DI box like a SansAmp or BSS or something like that to run in between your git and the DAW.

You also have to keep in mind that the "electro" part of an "electro-acoustic" guitar is rarely going to sound as good that the guitar sounds purely acoustically.

I record electro-acoustic guitar direct to the Tascam DP02 (which i then transfer to DAW as WAVs via USB). The recorings aren't bad, but I was looking at getting a pre because I had read that the sound quality / signal level could be significanlt improved by using a decent preamp. IS this actually the case? Or just a case of people trying to promote / sell preamps?

I don't use mine for my elec/acou 12 string (but it has a nice preamp itself.
