Power off internal CD-ROM when recording?

A portion of the acoustic noise coming from my computer is coming from my internal Yamaha 4416 CD-ROM burner (which has its own little fan). Since I don't need this CD-ROM burner when recording, have been thinking that I could insert a power switch in the power cable so that I could power off the CD-ROM while recording. If I have to reboot the PC when doing this, that would be fine. But I suspect the each time I did that, Windows would detect a new device. That would be somewhat messy. Perhaps it might be possible, though, to switch off the CD-ROM while the computer is running.

Do any of you computer-savvy people know if this will work either way?
