Hey guys, i am getting a lot of hum and hissing in my studio most noticably from my guitar and bass amps. Outside in my backyard, the amps sound fine with hardly any hum or hiss, but in the basement studio, where it counts the most, there is hum. I think it might be the florestent lights, so i keep them off when i record. I also think its the actual power source, i feel it might be "dirty" with ground loop hum. Will a power conditioner fix this, and if it does, what should i get?I dont want to lift the ground for the danger factor. I am on a budget, but i need to power 2 120 watt tube guitar amps, a 250 solid state bass amp, and possibly my Firepod and computer if the power condtion makes a difference.I have EMI filters i am gonan try first, do you think that will help? Thanx

A ground loop is usually associated with plugging into multiple amps at the same time. If it is a tube amp there is always going to be some humm (especially with the gain turned up). I have my amps plugged into a power conditioner while recording. Use the same conditioner for the computer/recorder, amp, FX, and mic pres. That will help if you are getting a ground loop.

Well the Furman's are pretty much a studio standard..... just about everyone has messed with one of these and they are cheap. I have the monster power conditioner and voltage stabalizer and they are excellent.

Have you tried running a power line to the basement from whatever outlet you use for the amps in your backyard? Might be interesting to see what that does. Right now you have too many variables going on to accurately determine the cause of the problem.

That's an excellent idea. That should tell you if the noise is an issue with the basement power outlets or some kind of electronic interferance.

ok cool, i'll try that. It's weird, my dad says thats its running on the same line, but for some reason there is more hum. I will try though because i never have physically done it.

cool thanx. Which do you have, is it affordable?

I have a Furman, a Gemini, and an Aris. I'm using the Gemini for my recording rig.
