Hi,
I'm sort of new to recording at home. On top of that, I have an assortment of gear to work with most of which is intended for use in recording and does so very well.
However, the mixer I'm using (Yamaha MC 1604) seems like it was designed with live sound as it's primary application.
I'm trying to make use of it anyway, but needing some advice. Here's what I want to do:
I have a BBE Sonic Maximizer that I would like to place in between the mic pres on the mixer and the pres on my digital interface (PreSonus Firepod). I want to do this in such a way that I can control the amount of Sonic Maximizer is applied to each input individually.
My mixer has the following in/outs on the back for each channel:
XLR - Input
TRS - Input
TRS - Insert/Out
This is what I think I should do:
1. Run my instrument mics into the XLR ins
2. Run the TRS In/Out into the TRS Inputs on the Firepod
3. Run the Sonic Maximizer ins into the main "Echo Send" jacks on the board
4. Run the Sonic Maximizer outs into the main "Echo Receive" jacks on the board
5. Use the individual "Echo" controls on each channel to tweak the amount of Sonic Maximizer is applied to each input on the Firepod
Does it make sense to go about things this way, or am I in danger of becoming a victim of my own inexperience? I'm certain that I won't break anything this way, but I simply don't know if the "TRS Insert/Out" was intended for this use, or if the "Echo" send/receive features of this board can be used in the same manner as any standard "FX Loop".
All that the documentation for the mixer says in this regard is that the TRS Insert/Out occurs in between the Gain and EQ stages for each channel... Which, believe it or not, doesn't seem like enough description to be useful to me.
So, with that, I will await some useful advice from those wiser and more experienced than I for some direction as to the best way to accomplish my goal(s).
Thanks,
