let me know what you think... especially with the acoustic sound
Hey man...I like the tune well enough... your guitar style reminds me more of the Alman Bros. than Garth Brooks, and that's a very very VERY good thing. :D :D

I'm chiming in on the acoustic tone. I think you could get away with that DI sound on the acoustic leads, but honestly, I don't like that brittle, electric sound on the rhythm acoustic. I've never heard one run straight direct that I liked. I'm just a fan of slapping the microphone up in front of the soundhole.

Cool tune, though.

The lyrics were really good, I`d like to hear them without the effects or with a little less. The acoustic has a consistent sound but a mic might give you a little more "woody" warm ambience. Nice tune. I'd play a little less lead phrases and let the singing come out more. :)

Yeah...I definitely hear an Alman Bros. influence here.

I agree w/ the slapping a mike in front of the guitar comment. Just out of curiousity, what kind of guitar are you playing. The DI tone sounds...well...sort of familiar.

I kind of hear a Chris LeDoux kind of sound to your voice (call me crazy...I love Chirs LeDoux). Your voice sounds like it might be decent enough if you laid off on the effects a little.

Nice song. It's a tad on the long side. But that's just if you want to learn to write for radio format. If that's not a big deal...don't sweat it.

Hey, if you ever decide to make this into a full production, I may be willing to throw a voice on there assuming I have time. :) I really like that Alman Bros. sound.

Chrisharris: I agree with the rhythm being too bright, it was a quick take and I thought it was good enough to get the point across. I thought it needed more warmth as well, my wife liked it as is. Im not a country mainstreamer but I thought the DI could add the the general flavor. Ive heard your stuff and respect your opinions. Ill try it again with a miced rhythm. Thanks for the feedback.

Toki: Right on, I agree with you on all counts. Your critiques are always appreciated. I used a double track on the vocals to cover up my revolting singing voice though I did let it go mono on the last verse which even sounded a little better to me! Lead phrases, well I just jammed over the whole thing and enveloped it down during the vocals. My most fun thing to do is to jam leads over anything, though in the context of the song its overdone I admit.

Jagular: Thanks for the compliment, I dont really need all that jam at the end I just kindof got carried away :) I dont even consider anything I post as a candidate for radio unless someone else redoes it with that pro polish. You never know , I would not mind selling some of this stuff either. Im certainly not pro material in the musical talent department and Im pretty new to recording. It would be nice to hear someone who could actually sing do it up right. I though it was a catchy tune, definitely more allman than true country. Then again allman bros do have a country flavor. When I redo the guitar part and make another attempt at it Ill get in touch with you about a collaboration. Sounds like real fun thing to do ..If I have time as well. Theres never enough time for the fun stuff is there!! Oh yeah I almost forgot Its a Yairi WY1 cedar top. By the way The Gift. Very Very Pro Very Good end to end I would be honored to have you share that great vocal talent on one of my songs. With a voice like yours your sure to make it big with something if that is your desire.

Decent tune man.Stripped down and bare.....makes a good demo tape. The guitar riff is definetly the Allman Bros.....it's actually a take of of their tune "Melissa'.....I know because I dated a Melissa who was a big Allman bros. fan.:D

The vocal has a heavy doubled vocal sound to it at times and at others it doesnt......is it doubled or delayed? It's a little too much at times.(Im a big fan of doubling myself.;) )

I agree about the rhythm guitar needing to be miked to give it some life.DI'd acoustics rarely resemble an acoustic.

Nice tune.

Kramer Yes absolutely! Now that you mention it it is the same chord progression as melissa I think. You see you think you come up with this stuff and find out that been inspired by a darned implant :) :) well the words are certainly original Hmmm Or are they??? I sure hope so. Theres a twist on the cadence as well. Im glad you liked it. Say how do you get the doubled vocal to stay together/ got any tricks?

Not really any tricks.LOL...it just takes a LOT of time singing and re-singing parts line upon line and word upon word until you get them to match as close to perfection as you can....a good Set of headphones and a decent monitoring system is a must. You have to hear that original vocal nice and clear to catch every little inflection,AND the current double as you are laying it down.I pan the first vocal take off to one side and the new double Im recording into the other side, so I can hear when I miss and exact double.

Once you get the 2 parts as close as you can then pick the vocal track you like the best and bring it up in the mix by itself.......gradually(im talking really slow)pull the fader up of the second vocal.Bring the second vocal volume up just enough to give the first vocal a little bit of body and STOP right there.LOL...anything beyond that is usually overkill.

Most of the time I EQ the 2 vocal tracks differently too.

I might EQ the second vocal to add/take away certain frequencies that the Main vocal needs to lose or gain.I usually end up putting Effects on just ONE of the vocal tracks also and leaving the other dry.....I have put effects on the lowered double track by itself and the main vocal by itself and gotten good results both ways....I've even put a reverb on one of the takes and a delay on another to get a certain effect....thats the kind of stuff you'll just have to play around with yourself to see what works for you.

It mostly just takes practice, practice ,practice!

Keep at it,you'll get the hang of it!

Kramer Thanks for the feedback: I guess I was mostly winging it when I recorded this. I really did not have it in my head yet which as you say is a must. I just had some words I scratched out on a very illegible piece of paper. Ill try your suggestions. Thanks Much
Bill

I did a quick remix of the song taking the advice of mentors above I posted it at the same link its called "Im leavin remix"
I added some warmth to the rhythm guitar, reduced the amount of dual vocal and set one dry and the other wet. Then I reduced the volume of the lead guitar during the vocal segments. and added some compression to 2 tracks. The result seems better but my 50 year old voice sounds strained and drifting at times. Let me know if you think its any better.

After listening to jagular's song the gift, I realize that I should sing as little as possible :)
Thanks Bill

Heh…thanks for the compliment.

Whoa…that’s a pretty expensive guitar. When I heard your song it reminded me of how my Ovation Celebrity sounds DI’d. I have some old recordings playing live with it and it’s a dead ringer. Please keep in mind that I was listening through computer speakers so whoa… I guess I was off a bit :D. I’ll bet that will sound schaweet mic’d up. Where as mine will sound pretty much like crap (tinny) no matter how I mic it. I ended up playing with the EQ a bit when I did record it in “The Gift”. I actually recorded that DI & mic’d simultaneously and panned one hard right and the other hard left and played with the EQ. Next time I’ll probably do the same thing except mic a second track and play with that. More than likely I’ll end up scrapping the DI track, but…you never know :D

Man…I really would like a really nice guitar someday :(.

I'll try to give it a listnen when I get home.

And...

BAH!!!!! - No one should ever stop singing. :)

I do actually like this remix better. I don't think your voice is as bad as you think it is. I think just singing with a little more confidence would give you an immediate boost in the sound of your voice and sing, sing, sing. I actually think your voice has a nice quality to it. :)

That was a nice listen big boy. :) everything is coming out front now much better and in its own space. You sing fine man, dont be inhibited, I`ll do all that for you cause I dont sing much at all. You jus go ahead and sing. Its good.

:)

O.K., so I listened to the tune and then peeked at others replies to avoid repetition repetition;)

I endorse the aformentioned advice that you would do well to leave those vox drier. You've a nice enough voice and with some back-up and dual tracks, you'd sound great.

The song "melissa" totally came to mind for me as well.

The DI sound gets old quick and your git playing deserves a better recording. I like the song but, I'd work on more thought in the placement and mixing of the lead git fills and a distinct tone for the rhythm git and the lead.

Nice job, just needs some tlc.

Thanks for the listen,

Theron.

TOKI: Thanks man ;You are way too kind. I finally got monitor speakers and Arggh. I can hear the mix much better than with the headphones or through my Pa,which is set up to play in an adjacent room like I was doing. Hopefully this will help or it may drive me crazy! Not my voice, of course, but the overall mix :) .
Your time and advice IS greatly appreciated. At this point a new recording is all that can be done here. Hmmm, Now Ive got to come up with a drum and bass track to go with this. Maybe a bridge... Its now on my evergrowing to do list. I wonder how many years It will take to put together my first Album, and if I have that many left :)

THERON: Thanks as well, I appreciate all the advice Ive been getting and I am slowly making some improvement. When I redo it I will definitely do a lot more planning. I just wanted to get it down before it dissappeared. I'm sure you know what I mean. I guess I have about a dozen songs now that I have to work on putting together a decent recording of. This just popped into my head and I decided to do a quick recording. Ive been working on tone and mix over the last several months and I think I am ready to start to put together my first track thats not just a rough draft. Yeah, Mellisa, well at least its a pretty good implant :) Happens all the time. I also have to face the fact that using Direct Input for my acoustic will not cut it!

You all are so very right about that. I can tell this is going to consume LOTS of Time.

Peace Bill

Hi Bill!

Sounds pretty good from here my friend.
Your voice sounds really good, very mello.
What mic are you using, the 58?

Sam Ash is still selling the Marshall V67 for $89 I think.
Best deal around for a large condenser mic,if your looking for one.
Sounds good on acoustic too,I have one.
Just a thought.

Good lyrics btw, looking foward to hearing more of you singing.

I really enjoyed it,thanks for sharing,
Pete
