Hi people,
well I survived another chistmas ... I have the scarrs to prove it ! ;) Actually it hasn't been that bad. But like a lot of families mine has quite a few "issues" that just seem to never get fixed... and Christmas has a habit of bringing these all to the surface .. probably cause in recent times it's the only occasion we get together :( But I'm not without hope and indeed I have managed to sort things out a bit recently with at least one of my brothers.. it's a start.

Musically I'm totally stoked with this song... and I think it's one of the best songs I've done so far. It's not perfect so as usual any comments/suggestions or even those who feel they could add to it in collaboration are most welcome.

Look for "Christmas Prayer"

PS Happy new year to you all too all. Esp those I've shared collaborations with and those who've shared there own music with me, namely: Lt. Bob, Gidge, erichenryus, chrisharris, WATYF, museman and others ... I've had a totally excellent time sharing my hobby with you guys.. thanks heaps

Nice recording man. It was a bit "crisp", but overall, sounded good.

WATYF

Thanks WATYF. Crisp is one way to describe it.. I prefer "clear" ;) I've been listening this morning on my phones at work and it does sound crisper here than at home.. but I've noticed these phones are a bit harsh before and tend to make ANY silibance rip your head off. Just out of interest what are you listening on ?

PS.... hey what's the deal .. no smiley faces in your post ???

Wow, that sounds really good.....

on my monitors (Tannoy Proto J-s) it sounded a tad crispy, but then I listened on my stereo with the bass boost that i keep activated for all CD's and it sounded perfect.....I agree that this is your best work yet......

Happy New Year to you and yours.....hopefully we'll get to work together again on something, and hopefully Ill get off my slacker ass and re-do that part I promised......:D

MIKE

yes!!!!!

great sound...love the vox..changes are cool too..nicely NOT the same ones i was expecting. Drums have a nice sound as well..pn some of the lower notes in your vox it is a tiny bit off...just a (tiny) bit...

anyway...i m downloading....

thanks

Gidge: Thanks mate... always good to hear from you. The whole song is on the crispy/clear side but as you say it just depends what you listen to it on. I did a few things differently this time... The guitar has capo on 3rd fret, but in my last song (lovesong) I found that the guitar boomed horribly... something I did not notice when recording. This time I stuck one of those rubber sound hole plugs in and it really killed the boom. I've tried it before like this and didn't like it, but now I have a diffusor and wood on the floor it worked well. I also just used the NTK and NT1 as a stereo pair at some distance and managed to get more of the natural chorusing effect of the guitar... but it's a much brighter sound.

For vocals I ditched the pop filter and just sang at an angle to the mic (NTK)... I also set this up close to the diffusor which I'd not done before.. a much much clear sound in my opinion that didn't need de-essing (?)

Jamal: Thanks... glad you like the drums. It took me about an hour and a half to tweak my TD-8 electric kit to get that sound.. about 40 mins on snare alone.. It always amazes me that with so many options there's only 1 or 2 sounds that really fit the song. I spent quite a while tuning the toms too which I've discovered really helps. Esp at the end of the bridge there are these little "sub tunes" that pop out because of the bass and toms interacting melodically... not planned, but puts a smile on your face:) As for vocals I'll check it out... can you give me some specific times ? thanks

No worries.... actually there are a few tiny off-tune places but I'm not about to tell you where they are ! :D Thanks for having a second listen anyway...enjoy.

great singing

...and great song to boot! Love the words to this, great writting. Famlily issues..uhhhhhhhhhhh yea I know where ya coming from there. Sorry can't offer any sugg, but I think it sounds pretty great where it's at right now. Very good work sir.

Thanks David... glad you liked the song. The more people I talk to the more I discover how rare it is to get along with everyone, even just parents and brothers/sisters. Christmas is just one of those times that is either a real blessing or a chance to rub salt into the wounds... I hope my song inspired you to keep trying.

Sounds too "happy" for my tastes...lol. I actually liked this a lot. I personally think that the vocal could stand some more compression, I think...it seems to jump up in places.

Nice tunage,

Cool vibe Dres, got my toes a tappin!
I dig the vocals,nice harmonies.

Good writing,I too can relate. :(
Family's family though, just have to keep trying I guess.
Hope it works out for you!:)

Great rythym section you have going, the bass sounds really good.

I really enjoyed it,thanks!

Pete

BTW-I sent you a PM

Hi, good to hear from you. It's funny I was thinking of you when I put this together ;) ... what a thorny topic I was tackling and how the music in a way doesn't fit the mood... I thought to myself I was setting myself up as a target as a hypocrite ! LOL but I tell you this song came out so fast I didn't have time to conciously give it direction. Glad you liked it though.

You could be right about the vocals though, they hardly have any compression. Thanks for listening. Say - when's your next father- daughter collaboration coming out ? I'm looking forward to that.

Cheers

Hi muzeman... I was waiting for someone to mention the bass... Again I tried something different. As well as DI'ing the bass I simultaneously recorded it with a mic !!?? Yes it's an electric bass (cheap Spector) but I noticed by accident that the tone was a whole lot better when blended with the acoustic sound of the strings and the body. Yes the signal is very faint, in fact the headphone bleed is almost as loud as the bass when this track is solo'ed... but it definately made a big improvement to the sound.

Great to hear from you.

Studiophile 8B's. And I think it has to do with the way you EQ it. It seemed a little "hot" to me.. almost like the levels were just below peaking (or maybe even barely peaking.. I dunno).

and I was kind of in a hurry... aboot to run oat to a movie, so I just blurted oat the first sentence that came to mind. I'll be sure to litter my posts with more smileys in the future, though. :p

WATYF

 ;) :p :o :( :) :D     :p :o

happy new year. nice one dres. And I haven't heard you do harmonies before so that was a nice addition.

and....believe it or not....i like the drums. the snare sounds pretty good. you know, i discovered something the other day that it sounds like you hit on also (most likely before i ever thought of it) the drums don't sound too bad once you run them dry. it's the damn reverb that makes them jump out of the mix like a sore thumb. i just realized how wet the presets are, and they don't mix well with anything like that!

it does sound a tad 'crisp' or 'clear' to me also. on my sony headphones plugged into my home stereo. i think some compression might take the edge off a little but it sounds like you like it real 'crispy clear' so don't change a thing in that case.

musically i like the hard stop at 2:05!

Yep I've come to the same conclusion .. the reverbs on the TD-8 suck bigtime. I've tried to get a usable sound with them but they are really bad compared to my Lex MPX-500 or even something like freeverb. I previously owned the TD-7 module and the biggest problem with that was most of the drum sounds included reverb of some sort.. you couldn't remove it. This was a major reason I upgraded to the TD-8 where you can always remove the reverb. Funnily enough I don't think the presets on the TD-8 are as good as the TD-7 but there are enough options to tweak the sound in most directions. And like I said tuning every item to the key of the song (even cymbals) makes a big difference... sometimes it's hard to hear a pitch but there's always some settings that sound sweeter than others. Also watch out for the EQ on the presets ... turn it off as this usually sucks too.

Listened again last night... my monitors and phones are a bit bass heavy (extended) which is why I've ended up with a bright mix I think. Will try and remix in the next few days and post again.

Happy new year !

Cheers
