I am still pretty new at this stuff. Some friends of mine asked me to make them a demo so they could get some gigs. We wern't using very great gear, but I think this song came out well. It is still waiting for guitar solos. Please tell me what you think of the recording and the mix. I really am trying to get better at this so please tell me what needs changing and all that. Thanks a lot. The song is called dust my broom http://www.soundclick.com/bands/3/boomtownbluesbandmusic.htm

I know it is a Robert Johnson song. I guess I should have mentioned that in the original post. Any tips on making it better? We tried for a long time to get the vocals good and this is the best he was able to do unless I might have some other version of him singing. I will go back and check that out. Anything else?

Drums sound way to back in the mix and have way too little brightness.
Hammond is constantly stealing the attention. I know, very little you can do about that, but it does get anoying.
Singer needs help.
Timing is not so great. Drummer needs to keeps his fills tight.

I'd try to get some better sounds out of the drum kit. The rest seems pretty ok tracking and mixing wise. I think the musicians need more help than you do.

The singer needs to use more brute force in his voice imo. He's whispering, sort of. Not that he needs to yell. Just learn how to use more air/some breathing tecniques to get more power into that voice.
He needs some coaching overall, and then he needs to practice.
Has he been singing for a long time?

No the I don't think the singer has been singing for a long time. We may go back and try to get better vocals from him, but this demo has to be done quickly. Anything else?

What is the best way of taking care of this. Should I boost the highs a little bit? I don't have to option of going back and recording it again.

Then your nailed. No fixing this. Adding some highs will make it a bit brighter, but won't bring the drums more upfront.

Nothing wrong with recording, but the drummer and bass aren't locking in. They need to simplify their parts. You might try ducking the hammond during vocals. Sounds like you're doing your job.
