PC load letter?
I basically want to ask if this would work, or if it could be improved, so far its only in my head.

Equipment:

Soundcraft ghost 24x8

a nice 24 trk tape machine (someday...)

a pc running Sonar 2.0XL or w/e version will be out by the time I can afford this

motu 24i, and then something to get it all back out of the computer

a midi -- computer device

a synchroniztion device, maybe motu digital timepiece

and finally a time code generator, I think?

outboard effects and other expensive stuff will come later.

So what I'm looking to do is synchronize the ghost, the tape machine and the computer. The ghost can output midi notes at different pitches and velocities to represent mutes and fadar movements, giving me the cheapest analog automation possible. When these recorded midi signals are played back I have an automated mix, NICE. What I'm looking, or dreaming, to do is synchronize the tape machine to the ghost, which can be used as a remote control, then synch the ghost to the computer, where I can record the automation as midi tracks in sonar. Now with this synchronization I can also use sonar to digitally record, edit, and play back audio in synch with the tape machine; I think.

What Kind of time code I would use remains a mystery, what cables I would need, even more of a mystery, and where I am gonna get all the money for this, that is the greatest mystery of all. I figured it would be fun to try to set up a "real" studio, and in 1-2 years I should have enough money for the tape machine and board at least.

Can anyone tackle the details of this project, I've got how it should go worked out in my head, but I dont really know much about the details of such a setup.

Have fun with this,
Eric

I've heard about radar 24 before, but that's the first time the link to their site actually worked! This thing is ridiculous! I really didn't want to stay on a computer, but this can get up to 192 khz, plus you treat it as analog. I've heard that this thing has some of the best a/d and d/a converters in the world. Looks like a pretty sick setup. With this I could probably get away with just a two track analog deck for mixing down to if I really want the tape sound, and then burn to a cd-r or upload to the computer, that way I'll save A LOT on tape. These thigns seem to be about as much as a 24 track in good condition. Thanks a lot, Im glad I finally got to see the radar!
