Thanx guys :)

I'll pull the individual tracks tonight and zip em up for folks to download....

Do you want a 'faders up' type of drum mix in mp3 for folks to record to as well or do you want them to just continue using your initial scratch track?

Beautiful song!

Thanks so much! I just downloaded it I'm at work so I won't get to play with it until later tonight.

I got some better vocal takes yesterday I'll try and post that tonight.

So any volunteers for bass?

I did a new acoustic track that's better, and I put wav files at:

http://www.recursor.net/Angel-Guitar-Tracks.zip

(225 megs)
here are the explanations:

MC-012-stereo.wav -- the main XY stereo track

C414-mono.wav -- threw up the mic in omni without much regard for placement to pick up some room - earlier, I had this track down, and with a phaser or something -- maybe not needed at all.

rawlead.wav - the electric guitar direct in -- can be used for modeling/reamping, or whatever, or ignored

BluesJr.wav - the electric guitar re-amped through an amp -- I might want to re-do this one, because there was more hiss than usual, and I'm not sure why.

I did not include the bass track, but can put it up if you want.

Since I played along with the new drum tracks, I didn't extend the solo -- we can talk about that :)

edit: oh, and my tracks are 24/96khz - sorry about the discrepancy. This'll turn into a mixing challenge :)

I can't wait to get home and load these up and have a listen!

It looks like there's some alignment issues between the drums and guitar tracks...

I loaded antichef's stereo track with my drums and had to slide the drum tracks over to start at 1:01:600 to get them to line up properly...

Just an FYI

:)

true about the alignment -- the guitars wanted to start before the beginning of the drum track, for some reason, so there was no getting around it for me.

purely for reference purposes, here's another rough mix with just the overhead drum tracks -- the drum/guitar alignment could probably be tweaked, and the levels are all over the place, but there you go :)

Hey what a quinky-dink... I was just putting together a rough mix too (I was bored at work) :D This was done with headphones so don't expect nuttin but a reference file... :o

I think the drums and guitar are a little more synched up...

I got stuck at work late and only had about 15 min to play with the new tracks before my wife got home. Should have some more time tonight.

Thanks a ton guys!

Still no takers on the bass track?

I just got word that my piano guy is out with the flu. Sorry I couldnt help out!

I will say it is sounding great though. Keep it up guys!

Thanks!!! The acoustic chain is:

1972 Martin D-28 ->

--> stereo: two slightly modded Oktava MC-012, XY
--> mono: one AKG C414B-ULS in omni mode (poor placement IMO)

--> Black Lion Audio modded MOTU Traveler w/ Black Lion Microclock (external)

--> Logic Express 8

I think both tracks are dry in the most recent mixes (they were in mine)

The electric chain is a Gibson SG Supreme, which was originally direct into the MOTU, then I re-amped it using Naiant's fabulous impedance converter into a slightly modded Fender Blues Jr., and recorded with a TnC ACM-4 dual ribbon (from the last group buy) modded with a Lundahl transformer, back into the MOTU - also dry.

Sweet, I'll try that tonight.

Nice.....starts with an awesome guitar. No wonder it sounds so great. I've only listened closely to the stereo track but I am really impressed with the sound. That tone on the electric is great too. I'm a big SG fan, that's awesome you used an ACM-4 I've been eagerly awaiting my ACM-3s to try micing my brother's fender deVille 410. Hearing the results you got with the ACM-4 just makes me more excited! What are the upgrades on the Blues Jr?

BentRabbit's drums sound amazing too.

What's your setup for recording drums BR?

I pretty much just reach for an ACM ribbon mic whenever I mic an amp (I've got the 2, the 3, and the 4, and I've swapped the transformer in each) -- I like them much better than '57s or I5s (or 545s or SM7 or RE10 or pretty much any regular dynamic I've tried). I recently picked up some MD-421s, but haven't compared them with the ribbons yet.

On the Blues Jr. (which is a newer, cream-colored circuit board one), all tone controls were at 12'oclock. Following billm's excellent instructions (at http://home.comcast.net/~machrone/bluesjunior.htm ), I did 1) the "twin stack" mod, where you jumper two contacts in the mids pot control, which allows the pot to ground the mids and completely get rid of them - changes the tone some; 2) the "tone stack mod" where you replace C6 and C7 with different value capacitors, and; 3) the ghetto-est version of the "bias mod" where you merely replace R52 with a higher value resistor - I went for 30k, which results in a cooler fixed bias for the power tubes. I have old RCA 6BQ5 (EL84) power tubes, which are operating at a safe temperature thanks to the 30k resistor :D. All mods were intended to make the amp cleaner sounding, and they did (although I did them all at once, due to time constraints, and so can't say what their individual effects were).

indeed -- same as for 200 Lashes?

I'm a big SG fan

I joined. I assumed it was OK that I don't own an SG since it's an appreciation club and not an owners club.:D

On another note what do you guys think about the new vocal track? Any suggestions? I'm gonna re-track soon so any advice would be appreciated. I need to practice more. Since I'm changing the lyrics a little bit I stumbled over a few words. The mic is also picking up the headphones a little bit is that a big problem? It's only noticeable when I'm not singing.

This is also the first time I tracked vocals since I put up my acoustic treatment. I haven't been able to really crank this yet cause I'm always half listening for the wife to come home and bust me.:p

So I'd be interested to hear what the more trained ears on this forum have to say.

Thanks again guys!

Still looking for a bass track BTW.

Then you can get no assistance from me :D -- seriously, though, I hate to admit it, but I haven't been able to sit down and listen yet - things get busy for me during the week. I'm hoping to get a few minutes on Saturday morning but then I have to catch a plane for a week-long business trip, during which I'll be reading the board, but unable to do much.

And welcome to the group, SG appreciator!!!

Still looking for a bass track BTW.

Hey, I tried a bass part for you last night, but felt something wasn't right. Maybe I wasn't in tune, or just wasn't getting the notes correct. I'm thinking the chords are just different variations of A, G and D. I can try again tonight if you still need it.

Cheers,

It's Am G D both verse and chorus the chorus has a D7sus4 mixed in at least I think that's what you call it.:o

I just listened to the new vocal track with the new drums and guitar...definitely needs redone. I recorded it to my original tracks, it doesn't quite sound right with the new drums and guitar. It out of sync but even when it is lined up the rhythm of my voice follows the rhythm of the old guitar so it sounds a little funny.

I'll re-re-track tomorrow after work.:)
