positioning of mic

hey guys.. i am fairly new to this. i need advice on how to set up my microphone and amp. i've never recorded mic'ing my amp before. how far should the microphone be, and is the placement of the amp important.

I own a cheap Audio-Technica low-end unidirectional microphone and TUBE MP by ART as the preamp. Thanks

Start about 8 inches away pointing at the edge of the speaker, not the center. Experiment with the angle and distance until it sounds sweet.
 
Or you could start with it right on the grille at the edge of the cone. Move towrds center of cone to brighten.
 
Put your amp up on a chair or table and move it away from the wall. You don't want it right in the middle of the room but give it some space.
 
Yo Revamp:

ALSO, just for fun and experiment, you could run your ax into a GK amp that has a speaker cut/off switch -- then, directly into your recorder; you get the amp sound but no sound from the speaker.

I did this for a bass player friend who was amazed at the results. But, those little GK amps are not cheap.

Maybe you have a cut/off switch on your amp? Try and fly.

wouldnt putting the amp on a chair color the sound would it be better to put a pillow or something between the chair and amp?

I don't see how it would color the sound but whatever works. Usually the amp is hanging off the front a few inches so that there are no reflections off of the chair.
 
i don't use a pillow, but an old bedsheet gets rid of some of the buzz that i get from the chair.
