porting a kick drum....

when porting a kick drum, is there any reason for where you put it?? I see some people put it towards the edge, some more towards the center...some even put in 2 or 3 ports....what are the reasons? Im not a drummer but I do have a kit in my studio. I dont have a ton of kick heads laying around to try each option so I thought Id see if anyone here has tried it and what they found.

1 small hole should be off to the side, that will allow the front head to resonate.
A big hole in the center will sound like there is no front head, but it will keep tension on the hardware to keep it from rattling.
