ooooh....voting...I'm going to pull the "Garfield and Odie" switch up on this one.....

Behringer Truths or Samson 65as would be my pick

Pretty much any monitor around $300 is going to have its flaws, so they're not going to give you the *best* possible translation.
I would suggest doubling your budget and saving for some KRK's or M-Audio BX-8's.
Still, not the best as the Mackie HR824's or the like, but a $600 pair of monitors is better than a $300 pair.
And $300 won't get you much in the monitor departent.

</$0.02>

actually.....if hes looking for portability...i would rather have $300 be portable and something go wrong than $600 be portable and go wrong......go with the $300 monitors if your going to be transporting them....unless easily replaceable...anything over $500 stays right where it is in my world. lol ..well except for the car....that was $500

really? have you heard head-to-head comparisons? i've heard the samsons compared to the bx5's and liked the bx5's much more

exactly my thoughts on why i should go with a $300 pair

any voters yet???

I'd get the Behringer Truths and screw some handles on them.

Doh!
I forgot he was looking for a "portable" pair....
:o

i had a choice of the bx5s, samson resolv 65as, samson resolv80as, behringer truths, alesis MKIIas. i asked about the alesis MKIIs and people had talked about the right speaker leaking something and being a little more bass heavy, the bx5s sounded ok but i thought the samson 65as sounded better, the samson 80as were huge and i couldnt see them fitting on my desk, the bheringer truths were $400 at the time and all i had was $340. plus i wanted a large enough woofer so i could get a good sense of the bass. so a 5.25 woofer vs. 6.5 woofer... i went with the larger woofer. ....and plus i was a little thrown off because the store had a demo disk with country music playing through it.....i record rock and rap. i did have the reciept so if i didnt like my music played through it i could return it and try another set...but i enjoyed the samsons 65as
