Actually, this thing sounds pretty good to me. I don't know exactly what kind of sound you are going for, but I like this. The drums come in pretty heavy at times, but I am listening on a pc with just decent, not great speakers. A 5.1 system, and can hear most of your instruments just fine. Sorry, probably no real help, but nice tune.

I agree with dogman, drums are kind of strong sometimes, especially the snare. Other than that sounds cool to me.

Kick ass tune. Props to the writer and performers.

Less snare, maybe less drums overall. Okay, anybody else? How about the background vocals, are they too upfront?

I think the background vocals sound fine. The drums are just a tad strong, like the others said. But uh, other than that... damn, I really like this song. Fantastic. I'm jealous.

Supercrepp, I listened again, well about 4 times, and can't find any fault in the vocal area. Very Beatlesque for the most part. Nice harmonies, but I don't find the background vocals too much. They seem to fit nicely with the arrangement. Just my opinion, but the only out of place sound I hear, is in the loudness of the drums. They just seem too loud for this song. All your stuff seems cool. Listened to it all. Just minor tweaking.

I agree about the drums.
Supercreep and I will tame them down a bit pretty soon here. I don't think the Beatles would have ever had drums in a mix that loud. Also, it's our 'old' drum sound (new mic's and pre's, now!)

Thanks everyone.

In all fairness, I don't think we're trying to be the Beatles here. But as you say, let's tame the drums a bit.

The insane powah of the mixing clinic? ;)

Boosting misguided HR dwellers to instant superstardom!!!

Or complete obscurity. YMMV.

It's a great song and recording. The tones throughout are all very pleasant. Better recording quality than many indie CD's available in stores that I've heard lately and not the least bit over-produced. Nice sounds on the bridge. If I had to manage any type of fix I'd say the electric bass is just a tad bit loud, and the snare as others mentioned. The lead vocal recording is impressive. I love how the vocals cut through the mix and every word can be clearly heard. Great singer. What was your vocal mic/chain?

Incanus - jump in if I'm mixed up here...

Thanks Nuemes. The lead vocal was sung into a MXL V67G into a Joemeek TwinQ, and converted with the MOTU896HD to Sonar. The background vocals are Rode NT1-A to MOTU stock pres/converters to Sonar. I found the NT1A to be a little bright, and when I add lots of layers (sort of my thing, I guess) the high end sizzle seems to multiply. Because of this the V67G is pretty much my go to vocal mic, until I can afford something really nice. The V67 is nice for my voice, which is naturally high/midrangey.

BTW, what are you listening to it on? I find that the bass is also overrepresented in my car stereo, but not in our monitors and not in the headphones.

edit - ROTFLMAO - song is now #2. I bet my cell is going to start blowing up any minute   :p :p

I'm listening on mid-cost computer speakers - Altec Lansing's with a sub woofer.

Looks like you found the perfect mic for your voice! No need to upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

I think the bass is overall quite ok. Not too loud. Maby just a biiiit too much mud there. Kinda maskes abit the lead vox every now and then.

Listening with Dynaudio BM6As with the Dynaudio sub in a quite nicely treated room.

Regarding the vox, you got it dead on as I remember it.
At first we did all the vox on the NT1-A, but after we got the new stuff we re-did the lead vox.

As far as bass (guitar) goes, Supercreep and I have long believed that this instrument is really quite cool and should have equal footing with all the other instruments, and be well heard.

And no, of course we're not trying to be the Beatles (or Oasis!). But I still think we should drop the drums down just a friggin hair.

How many layers? Just a curiousity. The vocals are the best part. I really thought they were good.

Each note in each chord has a double. I try to sing the doubles as tight as I can, and usually do just diads or triads with maybe an occasional wandering note. I think there's sixteen or eighteen vocal tracks, but I doubt they're all going at once, except at the very end.

That's interesting. I don't have the talent to even try that myself.

BTW, it was #1 this morning when I went to your link. That's pretty awesome guys. Some nice tunes.
