I don't believe there is a "best" reverb. Reverbs, like everything else, work within the context of the song.
As such, more is better. It's like having additional paint colors in your pallette. Not that you can't paint a good picture with just 5 colors, but you can probably paint a better one with 10 colors.
I see no one has mentioned the Cakewalk FxReverb. While maybe not the greatest sounding, the cool thing about the Cakewalk Reverb is that you can automate its parameters. I find that quite useful in certain places, and have used it solely for that reason.
Bottom line for me however, is that I have yet to find any software reverb that is even close to sounding anything like the lush reverbs I hear on commercial recordings.

What is Waves IR? I already have their Truverb and RenVerb. Those are pretty good - among the best software reverbs I've heard - but still a long shot from the commercial studio stuff.Teacher said:

I did a search on it. It sure looks interesting. I saw the "native" version for $600, and an HTDM version for $900. What's the difference?
You've got my gear lust quotient raised to a very high level. If it really is the holy grail of software reverbs, I might be convinced to spend $600. But I would certainly need to hear it first.
Maybe I'll see if they have a demo.
The next noise you hear could be my pocketbook groaning.

Htdm is just the Pro tools version
if your looking for a reverb unit you may wanna check out the Kurzweil Rumour...its $500 and supposedly sounds as good as its big brother the KSP8 and it had some sweet converters!

I found out a couple of things. First off, IR stands for Impulse Response, which means it is basically using the same approach as SIR. I assume, for $600, that it is a better implementation than SIR, or that the impluse files are better, or something.
Secondly, they do have a demo. It is a full-functioning 14-day demo. The demo file is 30 meg!!!!!!! I suspect this is due to the size of the impulse files included. Some cool sounding impulse files are included, like Ryman Auditorium and Clairmont Hall - Balcony.
I installed it on my work computer and the first thing it did was to write something to either the BIOS or the Windows Registry (probably the Registry). It then told me I needed to reboot. When I rebooted, the Computer went into diagnostics mode and ran Scan Disk. Although Scan Disk reported evrything normal, this whole process bothered me, and has me afraid to install the demo on my DAW. Unfortunately, installing it on my DAW is the only way that I can actually listen to it in order to evaluate it.
I'll let you know if I work up the courage to do this. In the meantime, I might have to try SIR first. The latency issue with SIR doesn't bother me as I run relatively high (95ms) latency as it is.
