You left out the option I would have prefered. A $500 (used maybe) guitar and a $500 (again maybe used) amp. Or 2 $500 guitars. There are some pretty good guitars on the market in the mid price range ($400-$600) which I would gladly add to my collection.

bought my 1987 PRS Custom 24 new for 1100$ its worth more now and plays better and stays in tune....well...than those others...and I sure wouldn't want 5 cheap guitars when I could own 1 good one.

I'm not anywhere near the player most of you guys are...I could be classified as a "caddy boy"... but I'm just as passionate for the feel, look and sound of guitars as anyone here.

I look at each guitar for it's own beauty, feel and tone...not the price tag...and the name doesn't matter to me either. If I like it, I want it.;)

I can only get what I can afford...but even if I had big bucks to spend, I would re-buy the ones I own, all over again. I would just have some high dollar ones to go with them!!...oh happy day !!:D

At the moment, my Hagstrom is choice for first grab...but I still love the others and have not put them away...nor will I ever.

I understand about going out of tune...but not all cheaper guitars do that...they don't automatically sound like shit, because of the name or price.

Maybe someday I will feel different...but I doubt it.

I now prefer my $400 Epiphone LP over my $850 Gibson SG. No care about cost or brand, it's about tone and playability all the time. The LP has such a smooth neck and overall smooth feel, and the SG is... I don't know... abrasive? I've tried lower/higher output pickups, different caps for the tone pots, tons of stuff and no matter what I can't really get it tamed. Seems like the Epi has much more flexibility with its tone.

Why not buy a used American Fender?
I had a Made in Japan Fender Strat and this purist guy I know said it was as good if not better than the American.

A made in Japan strat will cost you around $400.

I think this was $350 with a case, does not suck....

yeah this poll is hypothetical, kind of....

The $1K poll vote is kicking ass. Accumulative from numerous years of exp. and gear addicts.

I've owned Squiers, and my bass is 15 or more years old and a great axe, never a problem..not one issue and great sound. So cheap doesn't automatically mean crap...it doesn't mean top of the line, but I'm not a bass player anyway... so there that is.

the buying used, mentioned by a few, is not on the list, though this is probably the best idea of all?
Quality yet cheap so that would offer Variety&Quantity still, and in the $1,000 range maybe 2 or even 3 guitars..... ;)
but this isn't in the POLL!!!
DISQUALIFIED BEST IDEA> IGNORE> BEST IDEA>DELETE!! :p

Craigslist... $400-500 good cheap stuff list...some with a case included!...:D

Maybe even find a USED RELIC!

thanks.

Dang dood, you are a sick, sick man.

I would definatley be looking at 3 or 4 guitars over one $3500 Strat. There are some really cool guitars in the $600 - $700 range.

I'd go for 5 $200 guitars any day of the week. In fact, play a different guitar every day. I bet at the end of the week you'd have the makings of 5 songs if you worked at it.

With one guitar, you might end up with two.

There's an old saying, every guitar has it's own song. If I had only one guitar, I don't think I'd still be playing guitar - it would get way to boring.

I've got about 12 different ones right now. The more expensive Martin D16 doesn't get played any more than my Squire affinity tele. And they're both a hoot to play.

Variety is the spice of life!

This could be the dumbest thing I've ever read. :)

I'm curious why you think my post was dumb. It's based on 40 years of experience with playing guitars and song writting.

I get my sound through gadgetry, mostly. The slightest tweak of a knob and the sound changes immensely.

Of course, I have a crappy guitar, and can't wait until I get something better (September). My budget will be slim, so I'll get a mid-level Ibanez with a fixed bridge.

quality..there is no substitute

I've played/owned more shit guitars than probably anyone unfortunately.
When finally looking to buy a Gibson, my girlfriend said "stop dicking around and get the 1966 335".
I did and there has been no turning back. Should never have settled for second best and I wish someone had told that when I was younger. When you feel good about an instrument, it encourages you to play better I think.
Mike.

If I was going to spend $1000+ on an instrument, I would go all out and get a completely custom built instrument from a private builder. UNtil that day comes...

I would say, like others, to get 2 for that kind of money. One which fills your primary desires as a guitarist and another to fill the holes of the first. For example a tele and a les paul. At $500 to $600 you can grab a very nice playable guitar which at most would lack custom electronics and exotic wood of more expensive models (and of course country of orgin). If you went used you could would get even more for your money but remember to include the cost of a guitar set up and or fret dress if you can't do it yourself.

thats funny...

a guy in my brothers band, went for the eppi, he wanted the Gibson 335...then months later it still ate at his mind, so he spent more to get somne Gibson pickups...it sounded worse, but even then the Gibson pickups didn't fullfill his need to have the LOGO on the headstock...the real mcCoy...the US GIbson...

it still eat's away at him. He probably should have got the Gibson and satisfied his mental infatuation with Name Brands.

its for real, I'm not joking this time...my brother said its wierd because this guitar is gorgeous, and sounded better with the Epiphone original pickups...
in his opinion.

its fried dewd...totally fried...

I have a MIJ Strat and it is as good as a MIA.:cool:I bought it brand new with a case for $425 in the early nineties.

Regarding the OP,I definitely wouldn't want five $200 guitars, but you could probably pretty well for yourself with two $500 guitars if you did some research and were patient.
My most expensive guitars are a MIA Tele and a Gretsch hollowbody, but they hardly get played.I'm always playing either an Epiphone or a Danelectro.:o:o:o
