Wondering what software you guys like the best. I have amplitube 2 and metal, Ampeg svx, Guitar rig 3, Peavey revalver mkIII, Waves GTR. the one I use most is the amplitube 2. I like the interface and am just used to it since its the first one I got. I think Guitar Rig 3 might sound better though.

Let everyone know.

You forgot to include option #6: All software modeling munches donkey parts

conventional wisdom says that amplitube is the holy grail of guitar plug-ins.

i don't use software, but rather a podxtlive direct (modeling enabled).

just keep in mind that sounds are largely universal (within reason, of course). it's the ease of dialing in the right sound that can separate one plug-in from the next.

ultimately, go with your ears, grasshopper. :)

I'm a fan of Gearbox, which at $100 for the Gold edition with usb breakout box was a huge bargain. I have tried all the above and they all have their weaknesses, but when used for the purpose they were intended*, are pretty darn cool.

*guitar modelling software was never intended to replace the amplifiers they model, but to replicate the recorded sound they produce.

To that end, I think they are really getting close. Having said that, I just bought another tube amp today!

Gearbox suits my needs well, especially since upgrading to Gold.

Digidesign has ELEVEN, and supposedly Motley Crue used it for all guitar tracks on their latest album.

Personally, I use an assortment of free AmpSims and cabinet impulses.

I use Apple's Guitar Amp Pro that comes with Logic 8. It's good. I haven't tried the others.

Hmm alot of votes for gearbox so far. Only experience I had with this was on a buddies pc when he bought the usb interface with 1 line and 1 mic in. It was just the stock stuff that came with it, not gold or anything. I didn't like it very much. I guess I'll have to check out gold.

Amplitube presets mostly suck but after messing around with it I got it to sound pretty good. takes awhile though.

guitar rig's clean's are awesome and dist is pretty good out the box but I still like amplitube since Im used to it.

The peavey one has so much stuff to mess with. you can change the signal path in the amp, add tubes and tone stacks ect. Put different speakers in cabs and all kinds of crap just didn't really get into it yet.

I think waved gtr just sucks.

You can now add Overloud's TH1. The absence of a built-in impulse device is puzzling though. Revalver has them all beat there. GTR3 has NICE stomboxes. GuitarRig wins the midi control prize, but Amplitube's X-Gear option is a close second. Soon, somebody will get them all right.

Guitar Rig sounds pretty f'in good but I havent tried them all.

Im not sure which is the best...I think I have gearbox based on the fact my breakout box is a Line6 UX8...its been pretty good so far.

Ive only used it to Bass direct in...I have a decent Tech21 combo for guitar sounds...and I dont wish to compromise how I mic a gutar cabnet.

I have recorded amps and I have used modeling. I used to think amp sims where the easy way out. There really is nothing like setting up a couple 57's on the X Y axis or putting a C1000 offset and cranking up the tones. However, since I have been recording while deployed to Iraq (4 tours) I have had to use models. I use Gearbox and Guitar Rig 2/3. Recently I added the REDDI DI (best DI ever). Honestly, the REDDI sounds so good on its own that I use some reverb post track and call it good. Anyway, the point is, with some ingenuity, a few good plugs (waves RAXX and BBE) you can get some great sounds. I had a conversation with a traditionalist last year that raked me over the coals for saying I could get a decent recording with Guitar Rig 3 and my UX1 DI input. Anyway, I recorded a song called "My Sweet Heaven" entirely on Guitar Rig 3 to include the bass tracks. I even used Drums on Demand to make the entire recording "fake." Give it a listen, not the best by far, but not bad considering I used a UX1, a mexi-strat, Guitar Rig 3, and a laptop. (song number 6)
Vested

I got Gearbox as a freebie after getting my Guitarport. Just got the PodFarm update - you can set up two side-by-side amp-f/x combos and play at same time, mixing them as desired to get a great selection of combined sounds.

I got the Guitarport because I rarely used my old Bandmaster/2x12 combo, due to the family, and found my electric gathering dust because of it. I've found a new spark using this modeler - a chance to sample all the f/x pedals I could never afford!

Only used the gearbox really but its pretty good in my opinion. Got it free with ux2 and also got the PODFARM etc..
But yeah alot of sounds!

I've got all the Amplitubes, and they're good (especially Hendrix), but despite the money I've spent on them, my go-to amp simulation software is still the freeware Simulanalog Guitar Suite. Much more CPU-friendly, and simply stunning sounds.

I have GearBox (and now PodFarm) and Guitar Rig 3. Each is better at something than the other. I also have Amplitube 1 and can't get into it at all.

I use the Line6 software with my old PODxt as a sort of dongle for it. The PODxt pretty much sucks by itself, but with good converters and the processing power of the PC, it sounds pretty darn good for some things.

GR3 is also pretty good at some things and pretty weak for others.

When I record, I normally take 3 tracks at once. I split my guitar signal with a Lehle Dual and send one to a mic'd tube amp and the other to an instrument preamp for a direct track. I always like to have that direct track just for flexibility. The 3rd track comes from running the tube amp into a Palmer load box with the speaker sim turned off. The 3rd track usually sounds great for clean tones. For dirty tones I use one of my plugins to apply cabinet models only.

A slight diversion here: How do these compare with hardware modelers, and why?

Thanks for any in-depth answers!
