Which would you buy?

1. Mixtape quality CD by a rapper who is lyrically GIFTED and has ill produciton.

2. Profession quality CD by an artist whose production is corny and lyrics are simple and cheesy.

Just wanted to take this time to say that good music is good music. Even if a project is lacking in the more technical aspects(the mixing, mastering, EQ'ing, ect...), if the basic concept of the song has an artistic and creative quality to it, then it will bang. If the mix sounds great and the lyrics/production is just corny(some rinky-dink bullsh*t that nobody will want to listen to after listening to a few bars) then it will suck.

I'd also like to add that if a project's technical aspects ARE lacking, then that can easily be fixed by letting someone else mix it or master it. But if the concepts, melodies, and other artistic values of the music are corny or uninteresting, then the only way to fix that would be to stop makin gthe music. I say this because there is no alternative(unless you let some else write, produce, and perform your music.........................and then it wouldn't really be YOUR music)..

Thanx for your time:D :D :D :D

P.S.
Reply if you're feelin' me..........or even if you aren't.....

HOLLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yo,, I dont even have to tell you how I feel about this subject... I agree with you 100% i'd rather hear some muddy dope shit than some crystal clear bullshit...besides thats what professional studios and professional enginers are for to master the music...

And this entire site is here to help the novice and home'rec'cer come closer to getting that pro sound, using the modest gear they usually have.........

Also, you can't "fix" shit in the mix. Garbage in, Garbage (louder) out.

Aye,
c'mon dog...you can't be real.............I would 100% get the mixtape......(you should peep my bedroom).....so the tech end of shit and the tightest, but the actual beats, lyrics, delivery is off the hook........i got MAD "basement" tapes that are a little muddy from big name cats and indies and the music, skills are just phat as hell....the fact that the mix ain't ingenius or masterful to me doesn't matter to me.......especially if you're an indie......you just might not have the loot to pay somebody to mix, master ya joints....I personally,am the farthest things from a mix or master "engineer"....that's cool if I just post on this site or to give a little demo to my boys.......but if I was pressing cd's then I would pay to have it mixed and mastered professionally that's all......no biggie

...............................one..................

Hell yeah I'd buy the mix tape, I'm already this () close to smashin the radio again, too much garbage shit:mad:

I'd (maybe) buy some shit recorded in the bedroom if it the skills and beats were ill enough. I recently bought this CD off this cat in the street, The cover art looked ill, the whole joint was done extremely well, I just knew whey were gon be ill. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to listen first........... it was fuckin garbage! :( I was so mad I bought it, the shit was garbage!!!

But it was mixed and what not real good, the vocals were done good, the beats were shit, but they were mixed real well. The rappers sucked, their topics sucked, their singer sucked, the contradiction in the flow of the album was rediculous!! If I didn't spend ten fuckin dollars for it, I woulda smashed that shit days ago:mad:

Now I done had cats pass me their shit, just a naked CD with permanent marker on the top, no case, no nothin. Levels clipped, sometimes the vocals were louder than the beat, sometimes the beats were muddy or had too much highs in them. But the shit was tight as hell!! The beats were ill, the rappers were ill.

Now I done had some wack ass shit passed to me on some low quality, and some fancy shit that was good. In this case, the quality wasn't all that, but the guy was ill as fuck, I'mma ask him to do a couple joints with me.

Atillah, we all know what this is about ;)

That's good to know.... so you guys are not interested in improving your sound and you sure as hell don't want any sound advice from the pros on this site then....

I'll keep that in mind, as I'm sure Track Rat, Shailat, Sjoko, John Sayers, Kendog, sonusman, Harvey and a number of others (whose name don't come to mind at the immediate moment) will as well.... it's nice to know who we're wasting time on and who we aren't.........

gimme a fuckin' break with the bullshit anti-pro attitude...................

I think you got me all wrong man, don't take the fact that I would prefer skill over sound quality to mean that I don't care about it, most of the shit out there is garbage and is mastered really well, it's still garbage... sprayed with perfume, sprinkled with candy and laminated. Most of us are tired of that shit, and believe me, it comes unmixed, and unmastered too. Just because I would listen to a muddy recording doesn't mean I want my shit to come out like that... hell no!

I appreciate all the advice I get from you, and all the others, the mixing forum is where I first went when I joined. That's my main focus, to get my stuff to sound good. But All day, every day I hear wack shit, I'm sick of it, I'm not going to listen to it and comment on the skill of the engineer, I'm going to turn it off or break the CD. I stopped listening to the radio for two years, it only got worse.

Feel free to comment whenever I post music, I don't even take personal attacks personally.

Bear,
I'm very interested in getting a pro sound for my joints.......it's just that for passin' freebies out to my friends just to say "look what I did lastnite" or to play in my own home I don't think the most ingenius mix is at all necessary......nobody here is talkin' about makin' demo's to give to RCA,Arista or whatever.......we're just talkin' about the general concept, sound or vibe of the work.......if I hand over one of my joints and say "this is just a rough mix,it's not done"..I just want criticism on the overall feel of it
1)Do you like the concept?
2)Do you like the vibe?
3)Do you like the lyrics,delivery?

shit like that ....I obviously know that it has to be mixed and mastered etc.

If you buy a,for example,a 1965 Mustang, and it's all rusted and dented ,paint faded and tires flat ,and people new it was a project car for you but you weren't done yet,if you asked someone if they liked it you'd expect them to comment on the car in general wouldn't you ......I would ....I wouldn't expect to hear "no I don't like it,it's dented, tires are flat."etc..........NO SHIT EINSTEIN........it's a work in progress ....what I'm askin' is do you like the car itself......HELL YEAH,THAT'S A 65 MUSTANG!

another example.....
if you were bakin' a cake and let someone lick the spoon and say "do you like that"?I would expect a yes or no on the flavor alone.....not "hell no I don't like it,it's too liquidy"............once again NO SHIT EINSTEIN........IT'S NOT COOKED YET!WHAT i'M ASKIN' IS DO YOU LIKE THE FLAVOR ,THE INGREDIENTS!

I hope I did a good job of explaining that to you........sometimes we just need an opinion on the ingredients....not the final product..............yet

1.WHY ARENT THE ARTIST CONSTANTLY REWRITTING THE MATERIAL?

2.WHY IS THE MUSIC THE SAME MPC/TRITON COMBO?

3.WHY DONT A LOT OF ARTIST TAKE PRIDE IN BEING ORIGINAL AND ATTEMPTING TO BREAK THE MOLD?

4. IS IT TIGHT BECAUSE "YOU" LIKE IT? OR BECAUSE YOUR FRIENDS LIKE IT? DO THE CONSUMERS WANT IT?

ME MYSELF I WOULD RATHER LISTEN TO SOMETHING THATS CORNEY BUT SOUNDS CLEAN.

WHERE IS THE MOST MONEY SPENT MARKETING TO? PEOPLE WHO WANT TIGHT LYRICS BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE MUD (UNDERGROUND HIP HOP) OR IS IT SPENT PROMOTING "S DOT CARTER YOU MUST TRY HARDER" SIMPLE LYRICS WITH SIMPLE BEATS?

@BRUCE I TOLD YOU ONCE THAT I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE YOU IN THIS FORUM. A LOT OF PEOPLE DONT CARE ABOUT THE SOUND THEY GET. A LOT OF PEOPLE DONT CARE ABOUT REWRITING THE LYRICS AND MAKING EDITS. THEY DONT CARE ABOUT TAKEING OUT INSTRUMENTS AND ADDING OTHERS. THEY DONT CARE ABOUT TEMPO CHANGES AND LEGATTO. MOST RAPPERS JUST WANT TO LIVE IN A FANTSAY WORLD AND KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE BUSINESS ASPECT. BRUCE ASK A RAPPER WHAT A "PRODUCER" IS AND SEE WHAT HE TELLS YOU.......ASK HIM IF HE HAS REGISTERED HIS COPYRIGHT AND LETS SEE IF HE SAID "I SENT IT TO MYSELF IN THE MAIL"...........

Like most regulars here, I see the new posts from ALL forums...

I stumbled across a clip posting and gave my two cents on the SONIC QUALITy (as I usually do when I listen to a clip)

Instead of politely saying "thank you, but that was a demo and I know the sound quality isn't up to snuff....", the poster decided to get with a "fuck-you-I-don't-worry-about-pro-bullshit" attitude....

And now we have Atillah taking side-shots on my comments....................

So I'm here expressing my appreciation of finding out where the pros shouldn't bother in helping those that have no use for their opinions....!

aye Bear......read my post ........you didn't comment on it........wassup with that?.........I didn't write it being a smartass did I.......if I did it wasn't intentional...I'm just trying to explain......

P.S. "others" SHOULD take rap artists seriously........we're a FORCE to be reckoned with!

That's a generalization, how do you know I don't?

2.WHY IS THE MUSIC THE SAME MPC/TRITON COMBO?
You know the answer to that yourself, it's the same reason your album is gonna blow up.

3.WHY DONT A LOT OF ARTIST TAKE PRIDE IN BEING ORIGINAL AND ATTEMPTING TO BREAK THE MOLD?
Again, you already know the answer to that

4. IS IT TIGHT BECAUSE "YOU" LIKE IT? OR BECAUSE YOUR FRIENDS LIKE IT? DO THE CONSUMERS WANT IT?
I don't give a crap what anyone else thinks, if I like it, I like it, I'm not the masses. I judge artists by their talent and skill, the sound quality makes the the entire package sweet. If it's wack I won't listen to it period.

ME MYSELF I WOULD RATHER LISTEN TO SOMETHING THATS CORNEY BUT SOUNDS CLEAN.
I can respect that, I don't mind you not disagreeing with me on that.

Some people still belive in quality and not quantity.

IM THE JESUS OF RAP

and you're out to make $, I hope you do, I'm not in it for the money. I'll still get my stuff mastered though,... and I'll still listen to muddy recordings.

:H: [/B][/QUOTE]

Blue bear, I can understand where you are coming from, you are probably a mastering genius, and therefore would be doing yourself a disservice by listening to a poorly engineered album regardless of the artist's skill. Besides, I heard that can affect your ear for mastering.

I on the other hand enjoy a "good" artist, whether he/she is freestyling on the street, playing a guitar on a muddy CD, or dancing in rags on a concrete floor.
If the package is well prepared and mastered, I'll appreciate it a whole lot more. Is that such a terrible thing?

@me myself and him
That's a generalization, how do you know I don't?
my statement wasnt directed at every writer. it was directed at the ones with the "simple" lyrics.
You know the answer to that yourself, it's the same reason your album is gonna blow up.
i dont know what you mean by your statement.
Again, you already know the answer to that
no clue.

ok here is how i listen to music. first thing i listen to is the mix. where is everything panned,fx etc etc etc. while im listenin to that i look for things that grab me. it takes talent and skill to come with a clean quality sound. if the music stands out cool. vocals and what they are talking about is also good. metallica "hey hey heeeeeeeeeeeeey". all the time you dont have to have complex rhyme schemes or what not. however if you plan on a PROFESSIONAL release you should make sure that EACH element is AVERAGE or ABOVE average. why sacrifice?
Some people still belive in quality and not quantity.
whats quality to you? i believe quality is putting your ALL into it. doesnt matter who likes it. if YOU dont take TIME with YOUR work (not directed at you personally) why and how will someone else show interest? if its not enough QUALITY out now ask yourself some questions.

1.why dont we have quality music?

2.if im an artist what can i do to help make sure that i meet the needs of the consumer?
and you're out to make $, I hope you do, I'm not in it for the money. I'll still get my stuff mastered though,... and I'll still listen to muddy recordings.
no you know what im actually out for? i want the people to WAKE UP and LISTEN to whats going on. i want them to QUESTIONS the government, church, schools and those in power. i want them to LEARN and be concerned with REALITY. i can sign over all my publishing to you right now. makes me no difference. you are NOT goign to just TAKE it from me. i will give it to you. if its REALLY about money to me i would charge for studio time.

to me a good album is a good quality recording. its tight and cohesive. as long as i know that the artist put all they had into it that works for me. i cant get into music that i cant hear. instant eject. i can tolerate music thats clear but cheesy (only for a period of time). also i learn to ACCEPT different forms of music. some people cant and dont.

HERESY THE JESUS OF RAP MUSIC

Are we left only with corny and clean or dope and dirty?

I think I'll listen to my own music.

Who wants to listen to a shitty recording? If you don't give a shit enough to take your time and learn how to make a clean recording your not gonna do shit. If you guys put 1/2 as much time in learning how to properly use your shit, as you do talkin about yourselves and how your shit's so tight it don't need to sound good, then your shit probably wouldn't sound so bad in the first place and we wouldn't be wouldn't even have to go there! Shiiit...

@Blue Bear, dude I respect your capabilities(though I haven't witnessed them myself). This thread was not intended to be a big Blue Bear diss. I don't have time for petty sh*t like that. I would love to have a complete studio, but like many other hiphop artists, I'll make due with whatever I can get my hands on(a rocording boom box, a hand-held recorder, a computer microphone, a karaoke machine) and do the best I can. And as for the anti-pro attitude, man please!!! I may get silly on the mic, but I'm not a blithering idiot. That remark directly insults my intelligence:o !!!! Its kool though man. You just take things too seriously and too, too personally. Just calm down man:D.

As for everyone else, I never stated which side of the argument I was on. I simply stated some view of bothe sides. Anyone attempting to use this thread as a means of ridiculing me is obviously in desperate need of attention(by means of CONTRAVERSY).

Keep those comments comin' fellas.!!!!!!!!!!!

Holla!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy crap this is a long garbage post. Read it if you want to. I put too much time into it to not post it. Ha.
.........................................................................................................
I don’t wanna post a long crap fest but I fear this will become one.

This post is not directed at anybody in particular. If you become offended by it then I’m probably talking about you. But I wasn’t tring to

Anyway...I don’t like low audio quality but I understand that everybody can't afford to use the best equipment or doesn’t necessarily have access to the knowledge (or even moms pockets) that will help them to improve. I fully support anybody who makes a good effort, especially any efforts to improve. Some cat pushing homemade joints out his trunk is more promising to me (since that is me) than watching Big Willie push his bosses newest product. That’s why I’d prefer having a low budget, low quality project to the puffed up, hyped up, glossed over nicely mastered crap that some exec who just snaked a cat wants to sell me. Maybe it’s because I’m not so shallow that I’m consumed with a chick’s wardrobe, schooling, and bloodline. If she’s a bad chick then shes just bad. Fat and ugly chicks got some fire too. So nope, I don’t expect everybody to be a pure bred pro or just give it up and make way for the bigheads. I do expect people to live and learn.

I hate to death corny cats. I especially hate corny cats that record in good studios. Why? Well…fuck a lame. Especially a lame that can’t make the best of their lame ass luck. But I don’t really judge cats like that. I just take the approach that somebody’s gotta like it. Not me so not for me to judge.

Wow you go to the fancy studio across town. Are you happy with them? That’s all I can offer anybody who tells me that. Why? I personally could give a damn about what anybody uses or where they used it (until I need to use it). I’m never impressed cuz I know it can be just as f’d up as my 1680. I hope not. Hell I’m glad you are so blessed. Good luck.

Just wanna point out this is not towards anyone in particular.

Anyway… the last (or next to last maybe) P. Diddy cd didn't sound right in my car and I kinda liked it. It still had to come out. I would guess he had access to best studios, equipment, and engineers. But the cd still just didn’t bang right. The majority of No Limit cd's sounded loud and clear (I A/B my mixes to some) but I just didn’t like some of em. Some where just plain corny BS. They had to come out. David Banner (a local rapper) had a fair quality and put forth a very good effort on his cd. I banged it til it became a coaster. Why did I say all this? Well just to say…fuck a pro (the label). Fuck how much you spent and how much you think you know (your mixes can sound like crap too). Ha… If you are tight then do your thang. I glad for you. But just because Booboo and Professor Poop tell me two different things I won’t just tell Booboo to shut the hell up cuz he’s not a professor. Some cats might do that but I see it like this. Booboo will tell me his truth (he has no real reasons to lie) but Professor Poop might be and probably is so far up in his own ass he doesn’t think it smells. Ole Pro. Poop will want to have the answers because he feels he should have all of em. He wants to profess his knowledge. But ole Booboo just wants you to know what he thinks (that’s why I like this board). I mean some people are so gassed up on themselves they don’t really think and are just not capable of giving (or receiving) a good honest opinion. And it’s mainly because they want so badly to show they know something. So in these cases I’d rather just judge things for myself, take my chances, and learn from my own mistakes. Even if it means I dont make the standard. Can you forgive me for that?

Do ya’ll even understand that? Or is it just some drooling babble. Ha… I’m done… No…Wait.

Just one last thing…I enjoy getting criticism and advice from ya’ll. Whether you’re a Pro or amateur. I respect your opinions. I’m no spoiled brat looking for praise. I can take and need much criticism. Good or bad. It’ll only help even if it’s meant to hurt (the haters). I work hard (far from hard enough though) to do good work and strive to become better. I didn’t spend all my hard earned money to give up shitty mixes and lame beats. I don’t brain storm all night long to give people some cornball ideas about my reality. I come here to become a better producer. And yes I am a producer. Two cd’s in the stores yadda yadda. I handle my paperwork and pay my bills yadda yadda. I stole some of my equipment and shot my iso booth out of frustration. I get shit done. I produce. Good or bad. Peace.

I can't believe how much crap i typed. How do ya’ll cats do those long posts? Do you put your staff on it?

Don’t expect to see this from me too often. :)
