Hi dudes,

I wanna get your thoughts on this: what mic would you advise a beginner to buy, mainly for guitar, bass and vocals recording(no drums)?

i third the sm57....for guitar and vocals....go direct for bass.......

......sm-57.....or maybe an sm-57?........you can't go wrong there....

Shure makes a pretty nice all around mic called the SM57.

Detect a theme?

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this mic yet ,but it is pretty good , the good thing is when you have other mics you will still use it! SM57..

Don

C'mon everybody!

Let's all increase our postcounts! Repeat after me:
SM57! SM57! SM57!

:D :D

used 57

for the most part these suckers just keep on ticking no matter what. every used SM57 has probably done its fair share of hard work and deserves a good home! as long as the previous owner doesn't want more than 50 bucks for it, that is.

best all-around mic that everyone can own..

The SM-57 is a great mic and is doing a fine job of upping my post count

To differ from all the other guys.. I'd say a Shure SM-57 would do the trick for you...

I'm gonna go against the grain a little here, but you can't go wrong with a sm57.

Why do we all love the SM57? I realize that it's kind of the gag that each and every one of us is suggesting the 57 for a beginner, however I think with as many choices as kids have these days for cheap condensors, that they might consider something else, dependent on what they're recording. I would probably still suggest a 57 for a punk rocker, but for an acoustic singer songwriter, I'd suggest that Marshall (I think it's the 1006) that you can get for $99 from AMS I think it is. Or that CAD that Musician's Friend is selling for $99.

Oh, and don't forget, any beginner that doesn't start out with an SM57 should be drawn and quartered. (I didn't have the heart to break the streak we have going here.)

I think that the best part about starting out with the 57 is that you will always be able to use it. Its a mic that is in almost every studio you can find. It can do a lot of stuff for a beginner. It will also last longer than almost any other less that $100 mic you can find.

thanks for bringing light to me dudes,
I checked the specs of this one, and it seems to cut off all frequencies above 15000 hz. what's the deal? the shure KSM 32 seems to be a lot better, for approx the same price!, great range, great price as well.I think I'm on for the SM57!

no no no, repeat after me

Shure SM-57 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone!

really, you will be able to use this mic from beginner to seasoned professional if your ears hold up that long. Most stores sell them for under $100 and NO other mic can really withstand constant whacking from drumsticks, guitarists who trip over them or vocalists who try the old Roger Daltrey and still work so well for so long. I am sure you could start a thread on "Best SM-57' story and get a ton of laughs..... (wait maybe I will)
