polarity on sm57s

ok im a newbie so if this is a dumb questoin i appolgize. anyways ... i got a sm57 and was told that the top is supposed to spoin because it has an effect on the polarity of the mic. what does that mean? does it mean if i spin it to a certain point it'll get more range? or am i just way off. does the fact that it spins really have anything to do with the performance of it?

The plastic end on most SM-57's will turn - it's not glued on. And no, it has nothing to do with changing the polarity of the mic. Whoever told you this was yanking your chain.

No no, it's true! You have to keep turning it though. Don't give up, just keep turning it and turning it until you hear it...trust me!

Yo Fu! Many people who use th 57 for drums or bass will put a small drop of glue at 2-4 points to dampen resonant vibration of the plastic ring. For vocals or acoustic, I don't think it matters, much. Some mics you can turn to change the polar pattern, but not a 57. Enjoy the mic, it's a piece of tradition. Tsai chen.-Richie

Whoever told you that, go kick him in the nads.

Sometimes a 57 will rattle though, so a little glue or tape is in order, but otherwise don't worry about it.
